Baltimore Living Info

Published

Hello all!

Much to my absolute shock, I was accepted to JHU for the traditional program! I applied entirely on a whim as I never thought they would accept me, so I am absolutely thrilled to get in, but have realized I know NOTHING about Baltimore!

I was/am born and raised in Oregon, and have never even visited the east coast. Can anyone give me some info regarding areas near the JHMI that are on the transit lines (I won't have a car) and are not too spendy, but aren't trashy? Any info, be it warnings of where to avoid or endorsements of places to live would be WONDERFUL. Absolutely any input is appreciated! Thank you!!!

I love baltimore. It is definitely a big city with big city attitude. i just moved from there to delaware:scrying:. I went to Nsg school at University of Maryland, Baltimore. Baltimore is a tough city, but a fun city. I loved living there. However the area around hopkins(hospital) is a little scarey. I know they are currently trying to clean it up, but there's a lot to do. You can't imagine that a place so prestigious is surrounded by slums and crime. Anyway just call and ask some of your friends that live in big cities what they do differently as opposed to living in oregon. More or less you just have to take on a more guarded appearance/approach. Bad people in baltimore are drawn/attracted to the meek and weak. So always look strong and confident. Some areas that are cool to reside are mount vernon, the area around hopkins undergrad campus (charles village), canton, and federal hill. These are among some of the safer places. Don't let Baltimore scare you. Once you get comfortable and confident you will love it. There is tons to do. b-

ps Nsg school sucks. But sort of worth it. Good luck.

I'd recommend areas around the JHU Homewood campus. You can take the shuttle from there. Charles Village and Hampden are safe and affordable.

Mt. Vernon is where I live and in 5 years, I know I wont be able to afford this part of town. Mt V is well connected, best restaurants (inner harbour is all corporate; best food is in mt v) and it is still quite affordable.

good luck

PS- Baltimore mass transit is horrible thru most of the city.

I second PennyLane. I live in Charles Village and take the shuttle (free for JHU students) which takes 20 minutes to get to the nursing school. (The nursing school is also across the street from the JH hospital and right next to the Bloomberg public health building.) Charles Village is where the Homewood campus (undergrad) campus is; you can study at the library there too. It is safe and affordable.

Charles Village is your best bet - there are highly affordable apartments there - mostly single floors in rowhouses. You could check out Craigslist for places to live - you'll most likely get a better deal by taking over someone else's lease.
