Baltimore job market for new RN-BSN graduates?

Hello everyone,

I currently live in Philadelphia and am considering moving to Baltimore if the job market for new graduate RNs is better. I really want a staff nurse position in a reputable hospital. I am licensed in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and have applied to approximately 150 - 200 tier 1 RN positions at hospitals and have received very little response at all.

I have a BSN, went to a good nursing school and received very high grades. My former work experience was as a veterinary technician for the last 10 years (medical, but not human medicine). Unfortunately, the Philadelphia area generates something like 1100 new graduate nurses each year.

New graduates or veteran staff nurses, please let me know your opinion about the Baltimore job market and your experiences with acquiring your first staff RN job. Thanks so much!

If you're going to relocate, don't bother with Baltimore. I graduated in January and haven't heard anything back from any of the hospitals I've applied to. I'm actually considering relocating to Virginia because the market for new grads is so terrible here. I also have my BSN, and it hasn't made a difference. I'm sorry, I know this isn't the response you had hoped for. I wish you the best of luck!

Sadly, if you're looking for hospital acute care experience...I would have to agree. I will graduate in December, and I'm preparing myself for the worst case scenario. I know many grads from May who are still looking for jobs or working as Tech's on their preferred unit...hoping that a position opens up or funding shows up for new grads.

I work with a nurse that recently said University of Maryland hires a number of new grads ADNs and BSNs every spring and not all are graduates from that school. Inquire as to when they are having their job fair. Good luck.

Now that you mention it, I do recall seeing an OR Fellowship posted on the UMM career website. They also consider new graduates if they completed their senior practicum on the same type of unit (i.e. new grads will be considered for a pediatrics position IF they completed their senior practicum on a pediatric floor). I've applied to several positions there with no luck, but it would be worth a shot. I just wouldn't make a permanent move here until you have secured a position.
