Bad handwriting and job appilcations?

Nursing Students CNA/MA

I have very bad handwriting. I'm an IT person and have been working with computers for a very long time. I seldom write anything at all, and subsequently my handwriting borders on illegible, even when I'm trying to take my time. I also have shaky hands which I don't imagine helps.

I've been applying to CNA jobs for about 3 months now, and haven't gotten a single callback. Not even for an interview. Do you think my handwriting might be preventing me from getting a job?

It's quite possible that sloppy handwriting on an employment application might prevent a hiring manager from ever calling you back to schedule an interview.

Here are a few ideas. . .if possible, submit applications online. If the workplace only has paper applications, go to your local public library and type your information onto the employment application with an old-fashioned typewriter. If you have any friends or family members who have nice handwriting, ask them to complete the application while you sign it. Good luck to you!

It might not even be handwriting. Try calling the places you applied to back about a week after you applied. Don't wait for them to call you.

I agree with the above posts.

Also ... you might want to seriously work on those handwriting skills. If you actually get a job doing patient care, you will need to document that care in the medical record. If you handwriting is a bad as you say, it may be a detriment in KEEPING any job that you do get. Most jobs start with a probationary period during which time the employer gets to evaluate your performance and decide if they want to keep you. Your handwriting may make them regret hiring you and you may lose your job.

If you have a physical problem that makes handwriting difficult, you might look into vocational rehab programs, etc. (You mentioned shakey hands.) Some high schools, community education centers, community college job placement services, etc. might also offer some help for you.
