Hello: I know OCC well and the Detroit area. I was born there and grew up there. There are many community colleges in metro area that are great.
I attended Kellogg community college recently (within 2 years) and had a misdemeanor on my record). It had to be a nonviolent occurrence and be over 5 years old on your record. You can't have any physical crimes or crimes against vulnerable individuals. Anything like that, nursing as a career is off the table.
Luckily for me I had an acceptable situation, nonviolent and over 5 years. It seemed most of the community colleges around here had that stipulation. I was informed that people were being enrolled with recent DUIs. It was a no if you had two though. Of course, you could speak with the counselor for the nursing department. They cannot disclose anything that you discuss with them.
Going to LARA on the state website also will tell you a lot.
Yes, it is my understanding that you can expunge a misdemeanor. I was told after 7 years. That is on my list. I spent $70,000 plus fighting my case and still coming back from that. I am going to consult with an attorney on how to expunge my misdemeanor. I've been told that 1 felony can be expunged after 10 years. Fortunately, that is not something I have to deal with. I have not had even a speeding ticket since my nightmare. Hope I helped. I got my LPN and will be moving to Alabama. Then I will think about school again and my RN. Good luck to you.

Hello, I am interested in nursing however I am concerned that I will not be admitted into any programs due to the background check. I have a few misdemeanors and no felony's . I know Oakland Community College will not take any students with any prior criminal record no matter what is is. I am wondering if I have a chance to get into Wayne County Community College or any other Community colleges in the area that accept students with checkered pasts.
I know I can get the charges expunged however there is a 5 year waiting period for that and by that time I could already be graduated and working. Does anyone have experience navigating this system?
