Australian nurse in California

Published

Hi there, I'm an Aussie nurse going through the process of registering in California. I already have my New York registration and have worked there for a couple of years. I've come to a halt as Cali board of nursing have requested more education hours in pediatrics and maternity. I've seen this discussed on this forum before but all posts date back to 2012. Just wondering if anyone has been through the process of re-education in these areas or was able to avoid it? Where did you do it, how much did it cost etc. I've contacted a couple of LA-based universities and am struggling to find one that offers these subjects on their own.

Very disappointed that after passing the NCLEX and working in a New York hospital that California would still require this. Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through or knows anything about this.

California always does things their own way and has very strict requirements for RN licensing. There are nurse refresher courses for RNs. In addition, there are CE courses you can try to take. Search for L&D and Pediatrics refresher courses. Good luck.

Thanks for that! Any suggestions for refresher courses? I believe they require this to be university level.

Specializes in RETIRED Cath Lab/Cardiology/Radiology.

Perhaps you will get more information from the Nurse Registration forum, here.

Best regards!

Thanks for that!

hey! how did you get new york to approve you to sit the NClEX without the maternity or Pediatric hours if you dont mind me asking? ive enrolled to go back to Uni to complete these hours and if i can dodge that bullet by applying to work in NEW york i will!

Hi Aussienurse 123,

My name is Ann and I recently completed my bachelors degree in nursing from Australian Catholic University. While reviewing my options in the US, I came across your post.

After reviewing your post, I was hoping if you had any advice or share your thoughts on what would be an ideal option. I see that even with your work experience in AUS, you had a difficult time getting approval of NCLEX.

I was thinking about taking the Credentials evaluations but due to differences in course, we did not go in depth about Maternal/Infant health, which will give me an issue and the $750 fee that I have to pay will be a waste.

I have been trying to reach so many people to find the options to complete hours but I haven't able to find one. Do you have any idea where will I be able to do those Course (maternity/Peds)? Please, let me know your thoughts.

Regards,

Ann

One thing Aussie nurses need to understand..... AUSTRALIAN WORK/ EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE IS COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT. The USA will only look at your education and academic only- NO EXCEPTION. You could be a qualified RN who has worked in peds for 20 years- this will not be acceptable if you never did a peds placement at UNI. You will be peds deficient in your CGFNS report

Are there any Uni or colleges where I can take these course to complete these clinical and theory?

Did you find any Australian nurse who did get California RN licensed?

If I have to take one year course then I am ready to take it but I am not sure which College or University would let me take these course.

You should not do ANY courses until you have received a CGFNS report stating your deficiencies. Or else you’re just wasting your time as you won’t know what’s needed (If anything) all states are very different with there requirements.

I am in California so applying from here. When I had a chat with person in California Boards Nursing, he mentioned that I do not need to go through CGFNS because California Boards will do my course evaluation and I just have to fill out the license application and send them.
