Austin Hospitals/NICU ??

Published

Hello!

DH and I are thinking of moving to the Austin area later this summer from CA. I know a little about Austin hospitals (DH is originally from there) but I don't know much about their NICUs! The 2 main level III NICUs I see are:

1. St Davids Downtown

2. Dells Children's

Does anyone know much about these NICUs? I am coming from a large Level III/IV NICU that handles pretty much everything in the Orange County area so I am hoping to find something similar! If anyone works in the NICU I would love to hear more about ratios etc!

I've heard the payrate in the Austin area for experienced nurses is approx $23/hr + diffs (ouch -- mega pay cut!) :uhoh21: . I've heard that without state taxes my take home wouldn't really suffer that much so I would love if someone could tell me what a typical nurses take-home pay is after taxes (night shift)!

a. less or = $1000

b. $1100 - 1200

c. $1200 - 1300

Any help would be great!!

Hi, I don't know much about experienced nurses, but I am a GN in St. David med/surg. and I take home about $1200-1500. You can call the HR they are good at answering questions.

Waterlily,

I worked at St David's in OB. Busy hospital and excellent pt care. I also have a friend who works at Dell Children's and she LOVES it. The pt acuity isn't as high as the pt's are transferred there from local hospitals (no on-site L&D--just a kiddo hospital). The hospital itself is amazing and quite beautiful. Brackenridge Hospital (part of the Seton network) is the local community hospital and it would be a great place to work too.

I'm not sure what nurses make there anymore but I can tell you that the pay in Austin is much less than other cities in Texas. I just move to Houston and I make about $10 more per hour here. That said, the quality of life in Austin is hands down 100% better than here in Houston. My husband and I are already planning our move out of Houston. You might be taking a pay cut from CA, but the cost of living is really low here.

Best of luck with your move!

There are also two more level III's in Austin: Seton Main and Brackenridge.

None of the NICU's in Austin provide ECMO.

Dell Childrens gets all of the surgery cases. Brackenridge is the county hospital that gets a lot of uninsured pts. Seton Main has more deliveries.

St. Davids has a very large unit with a "pod" system, Brack is a pod system with 23 beds, Dell is all private rooms, I think around 30 beds or so. I am interviewing at Seton Main next week, so I can tell you more about that one then. There is also a level II NICU at Seton Northwest - but that probably doesn't interest you any.

Sorry, can't tell you much about the pay - I have been interviewing as a GN. (Iguess I can tell you that they both start out GN's between $21.50 and $22.00) Hope this helps some!

Good luck with your search!
