Austin Community College, Texas, Advice, Pro's and Con's, Nursing

Hello,

My name is Melissa and I am currently enrolled at Lee College. I am looking to do Surg Tech at San Jac. in the Fall (for my 'in the meantime' and have had a few previous attempts at Lee *For RN* Needless to say those did not work out for me.

I am wanting or hoping to transfer to ACC to try for the RN or LVN program..I have a few questions, and before I get started...I am new to this website! Sooo sorry if I get confusing or ask the same question over again...(Also, like I said I am new so if i posted this the wrong way/wrong area please let me know so I can post elsewhere! Thank you)

1. Will my previous attempt at this nursing school affect my application?

2. How are the test at ACC as far as the Lecture components?

3. Are the classes 8 weeks long, and at the end of those classes do you take an Exit hesi ( "Hesi" strictly over that section in order to move on to the next)

4. HESI Admission score I see it has to be a 75% or higher to be accepted or your application looked at IF one section (Say Math for example) Is less than a 75% does that mean you will not be accepted--or are your chances just less because of that score?

5. As far as Teachers being "there" for the students how was/is lecture days/lab days ...Do you get tested over certain skills, etc?

6. What is considered "passing" on a test/end of exit level 74.5 or higher or?

7. At Lee -you could not apply for both the RN & LVN school is it the same at ACC?

8. As far as testing anxiety, and disabilities does ACC work with students of this nature, etc?

Thank you for taking the time to read this or even if you can just answer or a few questions or tell me your experience at ACC for RN that would be awesome!

Feeling slightly discouraged with previous attempts at a different school. Disheartening to realize that your dream job may not be your dream job..I guess I just need some pointers or a feel for how your experiences were at ACC

Any help is much appreciated!!! I do not want to give up on my dream job just yet but taking a break, and still trying to get my foot into the door of some type of medical job to gain experience, and confidence!

Thank you soo much!

When you say you "had a few previous attempts at Lee"... do you mean that you applied or that you were actually enrolled & failed out of the program? If it's the former, it won't make any difference in your current chances, but if it is the latter - that is not so good. Most (non-commercial) nursing programs take a very dim view of anyone who failed out of another program unless you have some compelling evidence & convince them that everything is different now. FYI, If you are claiming any learning disabilities, you will need official documentation from a qualified professional evaluation, because this is the most common 'explanation' for poor GPA.

Actually, you may have dodged a bullet... Lee's NCLEX pass rate for 2013 was horrible (67.78%) which probably put their accreditation in jeopardy. ACC is one of the strongest CC RN programs in TX - their 2013 pass rate was slightly over 90%.

You're being smart - considering Surgical Technology as your Plan B if you are unable to get into a nursing program. Best of luck to you.

HouTx yes I "failed out" but by like 2-3 points to their 74.5 passing that you need. I asked because some schools have on their app. Req. they day previous attprs at other schools may affect your chance of getting in. I did not see that on ACC's site though. And you're correct the pass/fail rate there is not that great..the reason I tried twice is bc I still had all my materials from the last time I went there & I thought it be different I did get a little further than the first so I don't know..but thank you for responding!
