When asking information from the head nurse regarding a patient's medical record...can i use a digital voice recorder to retrieve the information? btw...i'm a student.

I don't know of a single working RN that would allow a student to voice record anything they said. Ever. I would not even ask.
(And...no, don't hide a recorder on your person.)
Some hospitals do have audio recorded reports that are retrieved by coworkers, but they are part of the hospital's database, not a student's.
During my first couple clinicals, I used a voice recorder to dictate information (my own dictation) from the patient's chart for my notes. Then I would go home and compile the data for the next day. This voice recording was completely unnecessary and I stopped doing it after 2 clinicals.
After a while you learn to take report without recording anything.

That sounds like HIPPA territory and bad ju-ju to me.

You'd be taking identifiable patient information out of the hospital....a serious no-no.
