Audie L Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital - San Antonio, TX

Published

Hi all,

I am a new grad LVN, looking to work at the VA hospital - San Antonio, TX. I just had a few questions. Background: I have not personally served in the military, but I do have a few relatives who have. Not sure if this affects me during interview or hiring process. I appreciate your response and help in advance.

1. What helpful advice would you give me (hiring process, nursing floor, etc). I really don't know what to expect since im a newbie ?.

2. What is on average the pay start for new grad LVNs?

3. Im also looking to continue my education to get my RN license. I hear they offer benefits/scholarships to continue your education. Are these opportunities available to military employees only or are civilian employees allowed to apply? What is the process and requirements to apply? (For ex, must be a VA employee for at least a year, only allowed to apply to public schools or are private schools acceptable, etc?)

4. If selected to receive educational benefits/scholarships will it affect me to change from full-time to part-time to pursue my education while working at the VA?

Please and thank you in advance.

Hi, they are legally supposed to favour a veteran applicant if two candidates are evenly matched.

I think you can Google lpn pay scale for that VA to get and idea of what they'd pay you, you look up the job posting on usajobs.gov it will give you the pay range.

The VA will offer you a salary based on your years of experience

The VA has a program that will pay lpn to get their RN. I have a friend who used it. You would have to be and employee to apply and you need to ask the local nursing education department about the process. You are paid to work and go to school.

Thank you so much for the information ?? Im glad the VA gives opportunities for their employees to expand their education. Im going to look into their requirements of the program to get RN degree. Thank you once again. God bless you.
