ATTN: Neuro and Med/Surg Nurses--Question?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am about to graduate with my BA in Communicative Disorders & Sciences and plan on entering an Au.D. (Audiology) program in the Fall. I want to specialize in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (monitoring evoked auditory, visual, and somatosensory potentials) when I graduate but am unsure of the demand for this specialty. Everything that I have read about this makes it sound like an awesome thing for anyone involved in neurosurgery, otological surgery, some vascular and orthopedic, etc.

One of my professors didn't think too much of this specialty but everything I've read seems to put it in a positive light.

If any of you neuro or med/surg nurses have encountered this field (often uses EEG or EP techs) I'd appreciate any insight, questions or any comments for that matter

You will find that those specialists are used primarily in the OR during neurosurgical cases. I had techs in my room most of the time, very little encounter with them in the ICUs. If you need further information, check with the Dept of Neurosurgery at one of the hospitals near you. Some work directly for the hospital, and others work for an agency. Hope that this helps.
