Attitudes of Nurse Recruiters

Published

I called a nurse recruiter at Emory Eastside Med Ctr today to get some information on their new graduate program. I was told the internship program would be for 12 weeks. After completing the 12 wk program, you would be assigned to an area of the hospital and they could not guarantee it would be in your area of choice. I was told that new grads need to be open to all areas and that there would not be any new grad on day shift. My main concern, was about the areas I know I don't like. I could not believe her response! The recruiter told me that new grads don't have a clue where they want to work and they are not in a position to make an informed decision, since they have not had any experience. I was absolutely disgusted in her attitude! I feel that a lot of us do know where we want to work and know where our passion lies and where it does not. I would hate to be under contract for a year and working on a floor I hated from the start. I'm wondering if any new grads are experiencing this attitude from recruiters?

Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. The recruiter is so friendly and really cared about my interests! The hospital is growing and I'm extremely excited to be a part of it!

OH AR that is fabulous!!! I had an interview there on Frid. She set me up on 4 diff interviews for this coming Friday. One of which is oncology!!! You and I could be working together.

I admit tho' I feel somewhat naieve and quite dumb in that I don't understand how she can hire any new grad anytime, unlike the otehr hsopitals in the region. Sorry for typos, I'm going fast now b/c I'm burning my lunch and must log off temporarily.

I sent you other info as a PM in your mailbox...Check it! I have lots of questions for you!!!!!!!!!!!

I've only had good experiences with recruiters. However, keep in mind that they are recruiters and KNOW which departments really need nurses. And so, may push a new grad towards that area. If you want a certain area, then ask for that area. Some areas are harder to get into due to limited new grad spots, but not impossible to get into. I wish you lots of luck.

J,

what exactly is the deal for nurse recruiters?

What kind of reward/bonus/commission do they make for hiring?

And that being the case, why would some act so grumpy towards AR and myself and, undoubtedly others, when they are in a position to fill positions and should have paramount customer service skills (and hopefully a ton of experience in nursing as well!)

Thanks

Well, I am not a recruiter; so, I can not really speak about the particulars of the job. I would have to believe they are offered some kind of incentitive for "filling" hard to fill positions. I do not think anyone has the right or should be grumpy towards anyone. I've dealt with a recruiter like the one you dealt with. I happily selected another hospital to work at, but if I really wanted THAT hospital I would not let him stand in my way. I would address his unprofessionalism with him and then his manager if he held it against me for pointing out his unprofessional behavior. That being said, certain areas always needs new grads, and so, there are plenty of positions to get into; however, if you are trying to get into an ICU or L&D, well, you may be competing against a lot of other new grads as well as experienced nurses for a position. In some areas, there may not be any new grad spots. Keep in mind that as a new grad, they will need to have enough staff to put with a new grad for 3-6 months. Now, if this new grad "demands" an ICU position and the hospital does not have a spot or has a more qualified new grad, well then the recruiter can only say, "No." I am sure the recruiter will offer you a spot somewhere else if available, but they can not just create a spot. This of course does not give them a right to be rude by any means, but some people feel powerful and let things go to their head. I'd suggest contacting the nurse manager for the floor in which you wish to work. Sometimes that is a better way to go. That way, said manager, can call the recruiter and say, "hey, I want to interview Ms. Smith. Can you set up an appointment for me?" I wish you lots of luck and I am truly sorry about your experience. Do not ever let someone mistreat you, be it a recruiter, doctor, or manager. However, be prepared to find another hospital to work at.

Good luck to you all!!

Jay
