Hi! I am writing a fake proposal for my nursing informatics class regarding managing diabetes in prison. Can anyone tell me how you manage prisoners' diabetes? Do they have to line up to get there BS checked and for insulin administration? Is everyone on the same schedule? Is the way it's done time and cost efficient? I'm googling, but so far, no luck. Any insight would be awesome!
I've been doing correctional medicine now for 16 years, most of it in Texas. In TDCJ the inmates come to you and do a FSBS and then you draw up the insulin and they administer their own injections. It TDCJ each inmate does a FSBS before getting any insulin, which is as it should be. I'm currently in South Carolina doing SCDC and it is NOT that way here. Sometimes they do a FSBS but most of the time they don't....it is utter madness. Luckily I'll be out of SCDC soon. Hope this helps.

Sorry, using my phone to do this.. My favorite part of my job is getting that call, grabbing a gurney , a jump bag and hitting the compound not knowing what ur gonna get. It's a great and rewarding field in many ways.
