Attend Diversity CRNA info session?

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

I'm looking into applying to a few programs both locally and out of state in the upcoming year. Has anyone attended any of the diversity CRNA info session and airway sim labs and later was accepted to a program with help from some of the information they received at one of these? The last thread I was able to find on this was from 2010 so I was hoping to hear from others who may have attended more recently. It appears that their attendance is pretty high so I'm hoping an SRNA could shed some light. And for a $350 registration fee, I'd like some real feedback on how useful a 3 day event like this was to others.

Thanks in advance!

I have not been to the events yet but I am planning on going to the one in Dallas in October this year. I've talked to a few people that have gone (and subsequently been accepted into other CRNA programs) and I'm super excited about going. Yes, the price is high to get in- but I also look at it as a long term investment in addition to establishing relationships with people that went to help you succeed that goes far beyond the value of a dollar. I say go for it!

PS.. look at Diversity CRNA's instagram account. Much more updated than anything I've seen on this website.

Soon to be SRNA here. Do it! Especially if you are a person of color, although in no way is that a requirement. It was so inspiring to see so many people who looked like me have the same goals and aspirations as well meet and make connections with those already in the field. I was able to find mentors, a CRNA to shadow, and eat lunch with my future program director during that weekend. I think it ultimately got me my spot in my program. It was invaluable.

Hi CV_RNtoCRNA,

I attended one of their info sessions in 2016 and I am a SRNA about halfway through my Anesthesia program. I highly encourage you to attended the info session if you are serious about getting into CRNA school. The insight into the profession that you gain and the people that you meet there are invaluable. To get the most out of the 3 days, you have to be willing to be sociable and network with any and everybody. Day 1 is the meet and greet where you learn a little bit about everybody's experience and background (less informal). Day 2 is formal. You get to hear from different CRNAs, SRNAs, and a few program directors from different schools. They all give you a valuable perspective from their level in the profession. The program director will tell you what they look for in an applicant. You can ask questions and get answers from people who actually are apart of the admitting process and from people who went through the process. They talk about the lack of diversity in the profession and how important it is to increase that. Day 3 is lab day and you get to get a little taste of anesthesia via intubating, central line placement, and epidural placement on mannequins(and a few other things). This was how it was when I went.

What I mean by networking is that you can ask the CRNAs there if you can shadow them, you can get someday there to critique your personal statement, you can find somebody with the same goals as you etc. Anesthesia is a small world and you would be surprised how somebody that you meet at Diversity CRNA knows somebody that attends a program that you want to apply to; That person can help you with the application process for that school.

Sorry for the long post but I think highly of Diversity CRNA. It is filled with people that have a vested interest in your future. Think of the money spent for this info session as money invested into your future as a CRNA.

Good luck to you!

I would love to go to one happening in dallas at TCU but i had the same doubts if 350$ was worth spending and what will I gain out of the 3 day conference that will help me in my application. Also finding someone that is willing to allow me to shadow was so tough since most places just allowed me to do one day of shadowing.

Was there any help with mock interviews in past sessions?

I am attending the event in Texas! Very excited about it. There is going to be a shuttle from the Marriott to the school.

I attended the one in Atlanta last year and will be starting CRNA school in Dallas in January. I had my doubts as well cause of the cost but I was serious about getting into school and the money was well worth it. It is an amazing experience to put in your personal statement that a lot of students won't have. I was even asked specifically about the conference during an interview and got into that school as well. Nothing like seeing a bunch of people that look like you striving towards the same goal. It was very motivating and the connections I made were invaluable. Definitely do it!

Hi all, can you please share some success stories regarding attending this conference and subsequent admission into CRNA school?

I am conflicted - there's a conference hosted an hour away from me that's a month after applications are due. That conference, since its close to me, will total only $410 after gas. Or theres a few held earlier in the year, but I'd have to travel out of state, buy plane ticket, pay transport, get an airbnb, etc, totaling $1100 just to attend this conference. What would you do?
