Atlanta L&D

Hey all... I will be relocating to the Atlanta area very soon (not exactly sure what area yet) but would really love it if anyone could make some suggestions! I am completely overwhelmed by the number of hospitals and have no way of knowing which one's to avoid or which one's are the best. There is one hospital in the area that delivered over 18,000 babies last year!!! I can't even imagine that many people having babies! How in the world do they do it!!! There are many others that do like 3000, 6000, 1000... yikes! Lot's of people having babies.

Also, is it the norm throughout the country to take care of two actively laboring patients? Or one MgSO4 pt and an actively laboring pt? Of the four or so hospitals that I have talked to, all of them have said 2:1 care. One, sometimes 3:1. (Maybe that's how they deliver those 18,000 babies?) One said they try to follow AWHONN standards. I'm very aware of the fact that larger cities are more acutely affected by the nursing shortage. I work in a medium southern city and our ratio is always 1:1 with actively laboring pts. I'm very accustomed to spending A LOT of time with my patients and their family getting to know them. I'm not sure how I would do with 2-3 pts at a time. Anyway... any advice would be much appreciated.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions about good areas in ATL, I would love that as well. I have two children 8 & 12 and want to move into an area with excellent school systems and also one that is safe.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I am not a L&D nurse, but THE hospital to have a babe is Northsiide Hospital. I think it is located in Sandy Springs. I live in Chamblee(Dekalb count). It is one of the best areas for schools. My son attends Chamblee Middle School (Magnet School). The area is really nice, just a little expensive. You can send me a PM if you want to know more information, I would love to help.

I am a nursing student and Northside is the place for L&D, I have had several friends and fellow nursing students have babies there and they all had good experiences. My sister had a baby at Kennstone in Marietta and she was very unhappy with the staff and the overall hospital.
