ASU Summer of 2011 applicants!

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

hello all you asu nursing hopefuls,

well, i decided to start this thread to get all of the arizona state bsn majors that are applying for the 16-month summer program starting in may of 2011 together. i went to the advancement workshop on 11/12/2010 and saw so many people there. i can't even imagine how many people will be applying. with only 100 seats open, it's going to be tough, although that's probably an understatement. the advancement scores for summer cycles have been lower than the traditional 24-month program in the past, but with all the changes that asu decided to make :uhoh3:, i think things will be different this time around. i don't think my chances are very good compared to other applicants. i have a 3.81 gpa... realistically, i'll probably have to get like a 92% on the teas to be competitive against students that have a 4.0, which seems like most do. i don't think that's possible...but i gotta stay optimistic. with replacement course for sciences being virtually impossible to take (seeing how you need so many pre-reqs for them which the nursing program doesn't require), i'm starting to worry:crying2: .however, all i can do is study my butt of for the teas and see what happens.

anyhoo..... feel free to share comments and stories, ask questions, and connect with other students that are applying for the summer 2011 program. this is just a way for us to get through the long wait until april arrives and to provide encouragement for each other. :heartbeat

I got accepted into the downtown cohort! So so excited :) Can't wait to meet you all at the welcome meeting! The 4 courses have showed up in my class schedule, but no set times and they are all labeled "HCR 394 Special Topics."

The whole process of getting my letter was a pain in the butt, because as of yesterday- I still haven't received it! I had to actually go down to the student services office and get a copy and accept my position right then and there on the spot. For those of you who haven't recieved your letter and you are above the cutt off score- I would do the same ASAP!

I read about two of you alternates having the same exact advancement score- as far as that goes- I was in the same exact position last cycle (spring 2011). Don't give up hope! When it came down to the last weeks before school- I was the absolute next alternate to be advanced and was told to hold tight and be ready to accept my position if it became available. Unfortunately, I was not advanced and the other girl was- I talked to the director and found out that the tie breaker was the submitted GPA, so you two may want to get together to see where you both rank.

For all you other alternates- don't lose hope! Although last semester only about 5 alternates were advanced, I heard that the trend is that most or all summer accelerated alternates get advanced because most are unaware of how much the program actually costs. Stay in the loop, get in touch with others to know your ranking and best of luck to you all!

Can't wait to start nursing school! Yaaaaay =D

Hello, I'm new to this, but found out about this from my dear friend Rach ^^ I got accepted to the downtown cohort as well with a 5.574! :clpty: yayyy! I'm soo excited to start this program and meet everyone! I was wondering if anyone knew any information on our first day, May 16th, the 'Lighting of the Lamp' ceremony? Is that an all day thing or is there anything else we do that day?

NurseAsh2012:

When I went to the "All Hands" meeting for the Spring 2011 admittees as an alternate last semester, I got the distinct impression that if you didn't attend the Lighting of the Lamp ceremony, you would be unceremoniously shot. So, you best show up.....but I don't think it's an all day affair. More info at the Summer admittees meeting later this month, I'm sure. And break out your best cocktail/formal dress; they want you looking sharp! Since this is such an auspicious event, I'm wearing my Sunday-go-to-meeting overalls.

Also, Tamara (an alternate I met last semester, who got in this semester like lots of us) created a Facebook page for the 2012 Summer Class (us). It looks like a great comms device, so you might want to check it out: Look on Facebook for "ASU Accelerated Nursing Students - Class of 2012"

Congrts to all of you that made it in. I am in the 2010 summer program. Let me know if you have any questions. Enjoy your time off before you start.

Hi cna to crna-

Could you please give us a general idea as to what our weekly schedule might be? I'd greatly appreciate it!!

EMTJEREMY-

just out of curiousity, what was your timestamp for the gcc/nau program, and are u expected to attend classes at BOTH campuses during the semester?

Rach2012:

Well, at least I now know who some of the alternates were from last semester that didn't get advanced: You, me and Tamara.

....we three were obviously attending the wrong church back then....

Hahaha, apparently! So excited to meet everyone at the welcome meeting :)

Hey guys!

I'm new to this as well! After reading through the thread, I'm sooo glad I stumbled upon allnurses. I also got accepted into the Summer '11 downtown cohort. I'm so happy! I'm super excited to meet everyone at the welcome meeting as well. :)

Wooooo!

I just got accepted as well at the DT campus I'm so excited.:) I was just wondering how is everyone planning on paying for school. I talked to finincial aid yesterday but they said I had to wait till I had classes on my schedule and those did not pop up today. But from others experience does anyone who had financial aid know if they were able to get enough support and loans though them or did they have to go elsewhere to get a bigger loan?

Does anyone know when we'll start traveling to hospitals and such? I don't think clinicals start immediately, but am trying to figure out the car situation with my husband and would like to plan. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I was wondering about financial aid as well, I don't know if I'm going to get anything from it, because my parents might make too much for it. Plus I don't think I can get it myself since I'm not over 24, if that's right. So, I think I'm going to be stuck getting a huge loan to pay for school. Does anyone know the BEST kind of loan to get that has the lowest interest? There are so many different kinds of loans out there and it has been a trouble trying to figure the best one. Also, where is everyone living? I'm trying to find a place walking distance from ASU and a complex that has quite a few students there as well. Anyone have any ideas?

ugh I just love ASU and there kind way of showing they care by giving us such short notice before we start.....

PC and I hit on this question earlier in the topic. for convenience:

For me, clinical started on week 2, with an intro and orientation to our "Well Elder" rotation. I started going there for actual clinical by week 3. Preschool started about week four, and the two ran parallel for a couple of weeks. Long term care/nursing home started around week 8.

tttt is right, you'll start clinicals in the second week, but I feel the need to define "clinicals." Clinicals in Junior 1 are not what you think of; unfortunately, you won't even step into a hospital until Junior 2. That's just how ASU runs their program. The first week is a lot of introduction/orientation stuff, but in lecture they will throw you straight in. The first part of clinicals will be your Well Elder where you essentially interview an elderly person about medical history, personal history, etc. They'll focus on communication quite a lot in the first couple weeks. Then you'll concurrently work in a preschool, gathering information from them as well, making a teaching plan, and teaching them a lesson. You won't move into Long Term Care until you're at least half-way through, and there you will be doing typical nursing skills like transferring patients, bed baths, feedings, passing medications (injections, yay!), wound care, etc. So you won't necessarily be thrown into a hospital in your first week or anything like that, which is kind of nice, but you won't get "clinical" experience with necessary skills until about the halfway point of Junior 1 semester (which would be around weeks 6-8).

so, in short: technically no hospital until junior 2, clinicals in junior 1 are pretty basic, and plan for tuesdays to be a 7:30 to 4 ordeal and for thursdays to be the same only a part of the time. it requires a large amount of flexibility :/
