ASU BSN program, anyone?

U.S.A. Arizona

When you applied to the Nursing program at ASU, did you have to be completely finished with your prerequisites, or do they allow you to apply while in the middle of taking their last semester of prerequisites? The reason I'm asking is because I've heard there is long wait period to get into nursing programs in AZ, and I was hoping to be accepted into a nursing program without a big gap inbetween finishing my prereqs and starting the BSN program.

Thanks in advance for the replies

There is about 8 months lead time on ASU's application process, but you can take classes after you apply. To get an idea... For Spring '06 admissions, the application deadline was probably around July 1, 2005, so new applicants would have to apply to the Fall 2006 semester. There's a requirement that applicants have a number of classes (13?) completed before they apply.

The Fall 2006 semester might have an application deadline of Dec 2005 giving you one more semester to take prereqs (Spring 06) while waiting on the final admission status which is mailed out ~June 2006. I think they let you take 3 or 4 prereqs in the last semester.

ASU has a mandatory application workshop between September and November 2005 that answers many questions.

FutureRNinAZ,

Well, basically what you need to do is have 13 prerequisite courses submitted by the deadline. For example, if you want to apply to Spring 2006 (starting January 2006), you need to have all 13 pre-reqs grades submitted by August 15, 2005. They give you a list of the pre-reqs that you need: Bio201, Bio202, ENG101, ENG102, etc. etc. etc. There are about 18 on the list that you can choose 13 from (I'm not sure if there are some that you definitely have to take, however...) You must also realize that you have to take the NET TEST and a written exam. This is how it works... ASU has NO WAITLIST but is based on a scoring rubric, 7 pts being the maximum. There is 4pts for grades (having a 4.0...if you have a 3.3, then you get 3.3 pts, etc.), 1pt for the essay, 1pt for the math part of the NET, and 1pt for the English part of the NET. Last year, 300 people applied for 130spots. If you got anything below 5.8pts you automatically "got dropped" from the application process and were not admitted. THUS, you can do the math to see what GPA you need and scores, etc. They don't tell you much about the essay part during the orientation. I think that for SPring '06 they are expecting a greater pool of applicants... Good luck!

P.S. If you already have a bachelor's, you only need 10 pre-reqs because they waive some of your classes.

For the Fall 2005 application, Eng101 and Eng102 were mandatory courses for the 13 classes used for GPA calculation. Also, Eng101 and Eng102, as well as Phi103 (Philosophy), are waived for 2nd degree applicants.

There are alot of applicants with high GPAs and test scores so the cutoff is pretty high on the bell curve. Like most nursing schools in AZ, ASU needs to add many more seats.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that for the Spring 2006 program, they have increased the enrollment class to 160 as opposed to the 130 last year. I do agree that the number of students should be increased!
