Associates VS. BA

Hi there,

I live in Chicago and I am looking into nursing programs. I'm only 24 (I know this isn't old...) but absolutely ready to get a start on my career/future! I've found some great Associate Nursing programs which would obviously allow me to begin working within a couple years. My question is: Is it hard to find a job with just an associates degree? Obviously the goal is to find a job and receive tuition reimbursement while going back for my BA, but in the meantime, what kinds of jobs can an RN with an associate get? Anyone know the difference in pay?

In a nutshell, ADNs programs are designed to produce entry-level bedside RNs whom take the same NCLEX-RN as the BSN grads do. ADNs generally enjoy a wide variety of job opportunties similar to BSNs at the entry level.

Some areas of the country are experiencing surpluses of new grads and are becoming more particular and are seeking BSN grads. So it's pretty regional.

The pay difference at the entry level is not much. Some places pay a small premium for a BSN grad.

The BSN is generally an investment in your future. Since you are young and unless you marry rich or win the lottery, or have rich relatives, you're likely to work another 30 to 40 years. On down the road the BSN is going to come in handy as you desire positions away from the bedside, such as leadership, research, teaching, quality, safety, etc.

Sounds like you have a good plan and I would go for it, but always keep the goal of the BSN in mind while you're still young.
