from associates to bachelor degree

so ive heard that in 2yrs hospital and nursing agencies are changing their standards and that everyone has to have a bachelors degree in order to get a job.. if its true then is it worth it to start a program only for associate degree that by the time im done i wont even get a job??

if u know any information pls respond! thanx

Just rumors, it won't happen, but more hospitals prefer a bachelor's degree. Not all hospitals but a lot of the big ones. Some people can't afford a bachelor's and some don't want to spend that much time getting one. Some just go for whatever program they get accepted to, associate's or bachelor's.

Factor in the fact that just because you're going for an associate's doesn't mean you'll only be in school two years, pre-reqs take a year, nursing takes two so that's three years right there. Then that's only if you get accepted first time around with no waiting lists, so we're talking four or five which is technically bachelor degree time. That's just the way I see it.

That's great and it probably will be good for you. If you don't have a problem finding work you can always do the RN-BSN or even if you do get a job you can also do this online because you've done pretty much all of your clinical stuff so you won't really need to be on a campus much. Only wait a year so the hospital will pay for it :D

Here in NY there is legislation floating around that would make it mandatory for an associate degree RN to have his/her BSN within 10 yrs of receiving their license. I don't know what the stautus of the bill is or the number f hand. anyone else out there a little more informed than I am at 7 am on a fine monday morning? LOL!!!

That's the way the current legislation is written. There is some talk about the law not applying to nurses who have already received their associates AND PASSED the RN board exam at the time the legislation is signed. We will have to see how it comes through the state legislature. North Shore LIJ has already made it know that all they want to hire from now on are RN BSN candidates so a BSN is definitely going to be mandatory to move up in our careers. I am currently seriously investigating online BSN Programs because I can't go any further without it. In fact Kaplan offers a BSN-MSN in Nursing Education. The only thing is i have been told to make sure that any program I choose specifically states that they issue the BSN if I choose an MSN program. You learn a lot from allnurse.com!
