Aspartame Headaches?

Published

Hello Everybody,

I've been reading these boards for quite some time, but never had a reason to post before. I'm a student nurse with quite a bit of CNA experience, but not much nursing clinical, yet. I'm hoping someone can help with a question.

I'm trying to lose weight, so I've switched to diet sodas instead of my regular high-octane ones. My DW heard "somewhere" that aspartame can cause or aggravate headaches, which I get rather frequently. The web search I did has a lot of conflicting information on both sides of the question.

Does anyone have any personal experience, or knowledege of a definite scientific study? Thanks in advance.

Harold

I use sweet n low in my coffee, on cornflakes, and I also drink diet sodas (usually diet dr. pepper or diet coke). I usually use about 4 packs of sweet n low a day and drink at most 2 12 ounce cans of diet soda. I suffer from frequent and "painful" headaches. I never thought about the artificial sweeteners I use causing it. I think I"ll try giving them up for a few weeks and see if my headaches go away. I know my mom is sensitive to them and gets headaches and sever diarrhea from artificial sweetneners of any kind. I've never tried splenda though.
