I was caught off guard at a job interview when asked about salary expectations. I have never been asked this question before at a first interview.
Anyway, I threw out a number that was on the high end, probably a bit presumptuous for a new grad.
Do you think I killed my chances? The interview seemed to go well but he is still interviewing other candidates.
I know now to have a stock vague answer prepared if this question comes up again at another interview.

I had one employer ask me specifically for a number for salary during a phone interview. Although I think having an idea of salary is important, I really find it rude to ask the candidate that without offering what their salary range is. The usual stock answer is "I'm flexible when it comes to salary, my biggest concern is finding a practice where I fit in and ....." If they force you into saying a number, you can say "I'd like to be around $95,000/year, but I'm flexible when it comes to salary. What is the salary range for this position?" Good luck finding a job!
Thanks, Annaiya. Good to have a line prepared in case this question comes up again.
He asked me to come to one of his other sites to see how the clinic runs, so hopefully if I show up and act enthusiastic this will be my last interview.

You know what you're worth. Don't sell yourself short. Plenty of demand for NPs, and you can move if you need to in order to earn what you want :) -- I do think Annaiya's advice about mentioning your flexibility but still giving a number is good.
