Are there travel nurse agencies that send nurses to Africa?

Published

I'm currently a nursing student and would eventually like to become an international travel nurse. I've searched everywhere for agencies that go to Africa but had no luck. I only saw South Africa but I was looking for somewhere in West Africa or the sub-Sahara. I want to do humanitarian work but at the same time I need to make a living. Does anyone have any advice on how I could work as a nurse in third world countries and get paid? I'm not seeking a huge salary, just enough to get by. Thanks.

I actually just graduated nursing school. I went to school for the same reason. I have and am finding out that it is a lot harder than I thought to do what we want. Transfering of license, learning or knowing a language, finding a company to go with, etc, it takes a lot of work. So far I havn't found any companies that do what you are asking per say. The best bet is going to be to go through an organization like Red Cross, Peace Corps, or even look into the UN. And you have to open up your horizons of what it means to make a living. Does making a living to you mean living at american standards (ever thought about not using toilet paper) or are you willing to live like locals (in mud huts or under the stars in some places). Your best bet if you still have a couple of years to go is to start mingling with people who already work in foriegn/3rd world countries and start asking questions and making friends. Think missionaires from churches, or aid workers home on furlogh. Also look into disaster reliefe organizations. They go to countries for short periods of time to set up clinics shortly after a disaster, some of them stay more long term. ALl nurses is a good resource but ask specific questions from the members of the board, your more likely to get answers on this topic. I hope you find what your looking for. You can message me and I'll keep you updated if I find anything. Maybe we'll end up in the same place some day who knows. Good Luck though.
