Are you relocating after you graduate??

Published

I'm considering relocating out of state after I graduate from my ADN program and pass NCLEX. I've lived in the same place my whole life and I'm feeling restless. I really want to be in a big city like San Francisco, New York, Chicago, or Boston. I've looked into travel nursing, but I won't qualify for that because I don't have any experience. So I figure I could just move - get experience and live in a new place.

Are any of you planning to relocate after you graduate?? What are your plans? Where are you going? How are you making it happen?

Have any of you already done this and relocated after you graduated? How did you do it? Where & why did you go? How were you able to find a job? What advice can you give me about relocating out of state?

I moved from Dallas to Houston right after nursing school. It is not out of state, but it might as well be since tx is so darn big! :) I moved for 2 important reasons, 1 because my boyfriend lived there and 2 because I really liked one of the hospitals in Houston that I got the internship position for. Just be warned that it was very difficult to attend the job interviews down in Houston while I was in nursing school! I was fortunate because I was able to schedule all my Houston interviews on my spring break and I had my boyfriend's place to stay at. I have had my ups and downs moving to a new place. This is the first time I have moved away from my hometown, first time getting financial independence, transitioning from student life to real world nursing, leaving all my friends and family, and trying to find my way around a new big city! It is also difficult finding a place to live since I did not really have a lot of time to scout the area and find somewhere decent and safe. But after a few months, I think I am finally settling in and meeting some wonderful people and getting a little bit more comfortable at my new job. I don't have any regrets so far. It is a big change to move, especially with all the emotions during your first year of nursing! Good luck and I hope you are happy with whatever you decide! :)

I graduate with a BSN in spring........as soon as I pass NCLEX I heading from Tennessee to Washington State. Too bad Washington isn't a compact state.....:(

My Fiancee lives on Vancouver Island so I'm moving there to be closer to her, we'll get hitched hopefully soon after I get there.

I have been dreaming of driving a UHaul to my graduation. Even if it's just to Omaha or back to Des Moines. I would love to go to Arizona or someplace south, though. I don't think I'd miss winter at all!

I moved from TN to FL about 2 months after getting my RN license. I don't recommend it, personally. Maybe if you know people or have family in the area you want to move to. I am stressed out not only because I am homesick, but also dealing with the stresses of being a new grad. It might be because I had lived in the same place my whole life. People that like to move around alot might not be as bothered. The first year in nursing is stressful enough without adding a move on top of it.

since i moved here to texas, it has not been easy especially since i dont know alot of pple, finding a job has been dificult only becoz i did not know where to start.i wanted to work at a hospital so that i can get experience but things are different, its hard to get a job at a hospital with no experience, atleast one year, so now im looking for a job in the nursing homes, which i hav heard pay good. i wish i had done a little more research before coming here, but now iam here and im not looking back, i blv i will get a job and one day i will look back and be proud of my self.so its been almost a month now since i got my lpn lincense and still not working.

but im hoping for the best.

I plan on moving to Chicago right after I complete my ASN in August 2008. I'm from Louisiana, but I went to college in the Naperville/Lisle suburb of Chicago. Loved my 4 years up there more than anything. Came back home to get my life together, got accepted to an accelerated ASN program and as soon as I'm done, I'm moving back. Can't wait to jump in that U-Haul.
