Are there any HPU nursing students or grads from there?

Published

Hi,

Looks like I'll be starting my clinical in Fall 2006 and I'm pretty excited! I just wanted to know what you guys thought about your HPU experience, professors, and other students? I really want to know what I'm getting myself into. It's really hard trying to find other nursing students to talk to who are actually in the program. Thanks for your help!

did u have a hard time getting in the program?

Any luck contacting HPU nursing students? I too would like to learn more and hey, I'm also starting my level 1's in the fall of '06. Good luck during finals week!;)

hi,

No one has replied to my post but I know there are a gazillion HPU nursing students. Are you taking summer school too? I'm taking Math for meds and Pharm. Good luck next semester!

I am an HPU grad. My advice is to go to KCC or UH. The HPU program is very expensive and for that extra money you get less. You do not get a senior preceptorship. When you go to look for a job after graduation you will realize that this puts you at a competitive disadvantage especially if trying to get into ICU or other specialties. The program has low entry standards (2.75 gpa). This means that HPU gets the students that can't get into UH. Class time is wasted on stupid questions from people who should not even be there. Instructors spend 80% of their time helping those with the lowest gpa while those with greater potential are ignored. The administration ignores input from students on issues such as the amount of time it takes to release transcripts after graduation. This causes HPU grads to miss the deadline for the Queens new grad program start date. Recently the HPU school of nursing used a group of grad students to teach clinicals. This alone goes against HPU marketing literature which tells prospective students that grad students do not teach under grads. To make matters even worse they put MSN after the names of these grad students on the syllabus even though they had not earned an MSN. This brings into question the morals of those in charge of the program. The administration treats the school of nursing like a cash cow with little interest on making it a stellar program. My best advice to you is to try to get into UH or KCC or go to the mainland. Hope this helps.

I don't want to be igorant but what is the full name of KCC? I know UH is for university of Hawaii. Is the wait list for KCC and UH longer than HPU? Do you think one can work part time and still keep up in the RN programs in either UH or KCC?

KCC is Kapiolani Community College. There is also Kauai Community College so it can sometimes be confusing. There are no waitlists for any of the programs in Honolulu. It's all merit based and I think both UH and KCC use a point system. And I don't know about any part-time program though HPU may accomadate you.

Hi Malia,

I read your previous post and notice you are starting Nursing school at UH. I also am attending UH but I am in the accelerated Nursing program which started this summer.

Just to give you some information about the generic program your in, i would say clinicals is not bad at all. Clincals are fun but depending on which clinical teacher you have you wil either work every hard or not hard at all. I chose a difficult clinical teacher and I worked very hard. I had to do a full patient health history and then do a 3-4 hour write-up on my patient.

anhow if you need more information let me know. You and I are on the same boat, i too am going for my second bachelor degree.

By the way, take it easy and don't get so nervous, its only nursing school. Just have a open mind and try to absorb all the information you can because your going to need it not only for your exams but for your career as a nurse.

This person knows what they are talking about.

I would recommend you go to KCC or UH but those two programs are very very competitive and if you don't have excellent grades and exam scores you will not get in because they are other student who have 4.0 gpa's who apply for both programs. I myself have a 3.9 gpa when I applied for KCC and UH and i got into both but i chose the UH accelerated BSN nursing because KCC only offers an Associates degree.

I heard from HPU students that the clinicals are almost self taught and that staff is not very helpful, at times they say they feel neglected and left hanging. Whereas UH is totally the opposite. My clinical prof. are awesome people who care about your education. The other bad things about HPU is the cost of their education. I heard tuition, books, fee's, supplies, parking cost in excess of $60K plus after graduation.

I graduated form HPU 10 years ago and I felt like I recieved a degress in paper writting rather than nursing. I felt that my time could have been better spent actually studying about diseases, pathophysiology and treatments/ interventions rather than write a paper on The Pros and Cons of Male Circumcision and Genital Herpes- no joke!!!! Also, many of the professors had MAJOR power trips!!!! My advice is DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck with your nursing career.
