Hi, I'm a pre-nursing students with just some info on 12 hr and 8 hr shifts. Can you choose? When I had my son at northwestern prentice in nov 2007. The nurses were on 8 hour shifts. I had my daughter in march of this year and the nurses told me they all have to do strickly 12 hour shifts. Is that every hospital?

All depends on the hospital needs. I work at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, and most floor RNs must work 12 hour shifts. Different departments work 8 or 10 hour shifts. I have worked at Illinois Masonic on med-surgical floor and they worked both 8 and 12 hour shifts.

Hi,
All hospitals have different kinds of shifts.
Some might have only 8 hr shifts = 40hrs.
Some might have only 12 hr shifts which they call .9 (12hrs X 3= 36hrs)
Some hospitals might have a combination of 2/12hr shifts and 2/8 hr shifts = 40hrs OR
Some hospitals have only 4/8hr shifts which they call .8
