Are you angry about the NMC OSCE???

Published

I wonder if there is anyone out there who, like me, who has been slogging through the NMC application process and has taken or will take the OSCE? Are any of you ANGRY about the OSCE? I am.

Those of us applying to be registered in the UK have been put through the ringer, been vetted in every way imaginable (references, one year of practical experience required, education hours, training hours, IELTS, etc), and the fact that they add a practical test on top of that is just redundant, unnecessary, and a huge waste of time and resources for everyone. Especially amid the UK nursing shortage, when they should be facilitating the immigration of well-qualified nurses, not hindering us!

I recently took the OSCE and failed the skills section for absolutely bogus and arbitrary reasons. But before finding out that I had a "partial fail", I initially came out of that test feeling confident, like I had done well, and there is no way they would judge me to be an incompetent nurse. But despite my feeling that I performed well, I also emerged from the test simultaneously angry and frustrated, for having just committed 5 weeks of my life to stressing, floundering through disorganized, overabundant study materials on the Nile website, and traveling across the world... all for a test that clearly has nothing to do with assessing a nurse's competence. All the OSCE succeeds in testing is our willingness to jump through meaningless hoops and pay excessive fees!

The fact that we are subjected to this psychological roller coaster is infuriating... especially from an organization whose bedrock is the holistic caretaking of all people!

And why the exorbitant fees? Why do we have to repay the fee if we sit again for the test? Exactly whose pockets are we lining? The whole thing just rubs me the wrong way.

I'm just appalled at what I and others have been through with the OSCE. I plan to appeal my test result and also lodge a complaint both with the University of Northampton and the NMC, who are the controllers of the OSCE. If anyone is interested, I will share what I write, and I encourage ANYONE who is frustrated to write to the NMC and make yourself heard!!!

How long have you been staying in the UK now?

Just two months.

You took it too early then. Have you had IM injection on your retake for skills?

thats the policy in our trust. We have to take it on time so that our visas would not expire in case we have to take the 3rd re sit.

Is it lM injection that you've had in your skills?

Is it lM injection that you've had in your skills?

yes, i did IM injection on my 2nd take.

Hello! Had anyone here ever got the chance to file an appeal to the UoN? If so, can you please tell me what actions or response did they had? Please share your insights.

How long did it take u to find out ur resit results?? I am awaiting my 2nd attempt results and I truly feel I deserve to pass this time, that being said I'm not saying I did it perfect, but I studied my butt off, made all As in nursing school, have been an icu nurse for 5 years at some of the best hospitals in america then came here and they make me feel like I'm an idiot just cause we may do it a tiny bit different in the states compared to here. It's still safe and sterile practice, I hate to say it but I think the places I've worked in america are way more advanced than anything here in the uk. I'm honestly thinking this process is a scam and I'm lucky enough to have a parent who knows some very high up government officials here in the uk so despite my 2nd sit results I think it's time to contact them about this bogus process. To really ensure a nurse is safe to practice, examiners or mentors should work side by side them in a hospital setting for months, like real life. Not a test centre, watch they'll do away with this process in 2 years after the complaint ts get so bad

hi ashley, i found it the next day after I took the exam. Its just awful and exhausting that exam was. I got a friend who miraculously passed that exam even when she just assumed that the medication box was the medication she was looking for. I hope that they do away with it.

It's honestly a terrible system, I can guarantee u that the university students who just graduated would not pass this test, they r just being picky unfortunately and not really assessing "would this nurse be safe in practice" much less considering the fortune we spend on the process, the hold our lives take, and the fact that they need us! Lol I'm about to move back to texas I had a great agency job making awesome money but my family is scottish, so I moved here to be closer to them but I'm tired of not being able to do what I love after a year and a half and thousands of pounds later, I'm awaiting the bad news email telling me I failed the resit I took yesterday, I've just lost hope they'll pass me

Hi there!! How was your result of the exam? I hope its a pass.

No they failed me again. They say I didn't do something I know for a fact I did. I'm gonna appeal this and ask for the video this is absolutely ridiculous. I'm going to the mp and the health secretary to raise my concen. I honestly believe they weren't paying attention enough as I was testing and didn't notice I did do what they say I didn't. I've never been so gutted in my life, a year and a half and 5000 pounds wasted and I still don't have my pin here. I'm so beaten by this process chica
