Apply for endorsement now or when BSN complete?

Published

I am going to apply to get my license endorsed from MO. I have my ADN and will be done with my BSN on May 10. I'm getting my application ready and wondered if I should wait to mail it until I'm done with my BSN. Will my CA license indicate BSN anyway? I know the education will be different so if the board thinks my ADN wasn't satisfactory then I'll have my BSN transcript sent when my degree is completed. I'm just looking to get a head start.

You should have no problem endorsing with an ADN: I speak from experience. I also know other ADNs who had no problem. As long your school was accredited, odds are good that you will be fine.

Your CA License will not have your degree on it. It will only identify you as a RN.

Thank you for the response. With my 5 years of experience and BSN that I will have when I start applying what can I expect for starting pay for San Deigo area?

Depending on your specialty and where you apply to, I'd say mid 30s to mid 40s per hour.

Oh, one other thing. The CA BRN moves SLOWLY, so if you are planning to work right away after landing in CA, you may want to start the endorsement process now.

Whether there are any difficulties with your ADN education or not, completing a BSN won't make a difference. All US states, not just CA, base their licensure decisions on your original basic nursing education program that first made you eligible for licensure. Nothing you do educationally after that changes or affects the status of your original nursing program (because it doesn't affect licensure; you don't retake the NCLEX and get a different license when you complete a BSN -- it's all the same license). If there is a problem in a particular state with (smeone's) original nursing program, completing a BSN later isn't going to "fix" that.

On that note, I hope you didn't get your ADN through Excelsior. No slur upon the school--I hear it's rather fine--but the CA BRN will not license those who graduated from there after 2003.

I did go ahead and apply. According to tracking my packet was delivered today so now the waiting game starts. I complete my ADN at a community college and my BSN through university. Hopefully it works out! It says to allow 4-6 weeks if I have not heard anything before calling to check. Any idea on how they will contact me to let me know when they decide?
