Applied for Extended RN program at CSN/ Fall Sem 2012. Need experienced input please.

Published

I finally turned in my application for the Fall 2012 Nursing program. I recently got a FT job because of financial troubles. Luckily I got a job with a great company, good pay, and RN positions (for future advancement)but now this means that I would have to do the Extended program. I'm concerned because I keep hearing that the first sem of Nursing is the same for FT and PT. Are the classes, clinicals, labs, etc.at a specific time for everyone or can we choose what time to attend, like all other pre-req classes? I would need to find evening and weekend classes. Is that possible?

Anyone else applying for Fall 2012 want to build an early study group?

I applied for the extended track too. I also work full-time so a study group might be hard for me but if I have time I'd love to do one. I was an alternate last semester so I do know a little about how it works. I know that they do have evening classes and online classes but as far as clinicals go Im not sure if they have weekend times available. How it works the first semester is everyone gets a number at orientation from 1-140 or however many spots they have. According to your number you get to go in the hall and pick out your schedule for the semester. After your first semester you can register on your own and choose whatever hours work best for you. I'm just saving up my PTO so I can take time off during the day if I need to for school and hopeing that someone may want to switch with me if I get a schedule that doesn't work. I'm thinking that most people wont want to go to school or clinicals on the weekend so I may luck out and get a weekend schedule.

There is another string of comments about the RN program in the Fall on this website. You should post there, I know I check it all the time so someone else might have better insight than I do.

Good luck, hope to meet you at orientation. How many points did you apply with? I have 27, crossing my fingers!

Thank you for the response! I honestly can't say how many points but I think it was 29. My gpa was at a 3.7 but then I got a B in A&P 223 and a C in 224 so, Idk... I also didn't realize they only accept 24 student in the extended program, otherwise I would have chosen to full time program. I know we will be very busy for study groups, but perhaps we can make time at least for exams. 2 - 4 more weeks of waiting now, ugh!

Oh and I did find out that we can choose our schedule from classes available (even evening/weekend) but it depends on whether there is room for us to enroll when our turn comes up. So they suggest we have some flexibility at work. I guess you and I have the same plan. Trying to save up my PTO but being the new girl still, idk if that's going to fly with them in 6 months.

not meaning to sound like a drag but honestly study groups in this program are kind of a waste of time, studying is best done on your own and then maybe setting up a meet with a student or two the day before the exam, but its so hard to get something set up half the time because of everyones busy schedule IMO, but best of luck to you when you get in =)

Hey Bea123 I was called and told I was an alternate for fall 2012 can you spread some light on this for me. They told me to go to orientation and count on starting cause so many students may drop, change their mind etc. Once your an alternate to you have to keep reapplying? Any info would be great. thanks.

Hi jzeno,

Basically it means you are an alternate for this semester only so you have to do everything as if you were actually accepted meaning orientation, shots, ect. It depends on how many people drop out or miss orientation so you could know by next friday if you got in or not till a week before the program starts in August. It's just a waiting game. If you aren't accepted this semester you'll have to re-apply for next semester. Good luck, hope it works out!

Thanks for thd insight. Did u get in this time??

Alternate too. Part-time program. At orientation they count up how many spots there are in a round about way so you can kind of gage how many spots are open. When they hand out the numbers to pick your schedule there are some leftover because some people don't show so they fill in the gaps by moving higher numbers lower, if that makes sense. Last year I know they took quite a few alternates for full time and I have no idea how many for part time but I wasn't one of them. I'm truely happy for those that get in, I've already been through school once in health care admin and I work full-time so if I don't get in it's not the end of the world. Just something I always wanted to do and felt I'd be good at. Good luck to you!
