Hello,

I am a nursing student and I work as a PCA on another floor at BWH. I am going to start working on a Medical Intermediate unit. The nurse patient ratio was only three...i was surprised because I thought a Medical Intermediate unit was the same as a Med-Surg floor.

Does anyone work on a Medical Intermediate unit at BWH? Or, on a similar floor on another unit? If so, how does a Medical Intermediate floor differ from a Med-Surg floor at BWH? The NM was telling me that people are on bipap and can be on drips on this floor. So, I'm confused as how new graduate nurses are hired onto these floors. Is it definitely a higher acuity unit than a Med-Surg?

Any information anyone could provide would be awesome!

Thanks so much :)

I do not know anything specific to BWH but usually intermediate floors are for people who are stable enough to get out of ICU but not quite ready for the general med-surg floor.

New grads are being hired into almost every specialty now so it doesn't surprise me they are starting on that floor.
