I've been a nurse for almost 5 years. All of my experience has been at one hospital (med/surg/rehab with a lot of vent/trach experience). I have always been interested in traveling, and I would really like to take the plunge now while my kids are young and not in school. Hawaii is some place we're interested in. Has anybody done travel/agency work there? Any suggestions on agency, location, etc. I've been doing a lot of research, but it's hard to get an idea of which companies are best to work with. Thanks!

I stayed a year in Hawaii but it was about 6 months too long. Got Island Fever after I thought I loved it there and decided to take a perdiem position at the hospital and ended my travel contract. It must be a bit harder to find positions there now, I have a friend who does PACU and it took her almost a year to finally get a position. She is still struggling with the lower pay, high cost of living and the fact you have to fly there and back. Can't load everyone in the car and drive, and if you are taking the family the agency won't likely pay for them to travel with you. Wonderful experience, just can't live there.

Had a good experience with Core Medical- they seem to cover Maui and Hilo. There are other (local) agencies that cover Oahu...If you fly from the east coast be prepared for about 11-12 hours in the air.

Hi Lynn I am looking to travel nurse in Hawaii also. I was wondering if you are there now since your post was over 2m ago. I travel nursed 5 years ago for 2 yrs in CA before kids, Now we want to go bf our kids are in school, kinda like you. My kids are 4, 3, and 1. My family thinks we are crazy. Have you traveled nursed with your kids bedore? Can you give me some tips and advice. My husband would quit his job and be the SAHD. Kinda risky but if we are going to Hawaii it's worth it!
Thanks Melanie (Labor & Delivery RN)

Planning HI in Dec-Jan. Do the "local" agencies in Oahu arrange housing ? (Does anyone know?) Has anyone traveled there with any of the "larger" agencies?

@ Melanie hello I am a traveling nurse with children ( Lpn, dialysis) as long as you have some one to watch the kids you can do it. I took my mom with me and I also have 3 and put them in school. Good luck on you adventures
