I am working on beginning my travel career and am torn on whether to keep an unoccupied apt where I currently live and continue to pay for this while I travel or to just put my stuff in storage and not worry about when and for how long I need to come back to satisfy the IRS qualifications for a real legit tax home. Are there any travelers who currently do this as an itinerant worker and know what I can and cannot expect as far as pros/cons of this situation. I am just concerned about the consequences of my higher tax bracket and maybe other things I may be unaware of at this point. Anyone out there willing to discuss this with me, I would appreciate your info. Thanks!!

I'm not a travelling nurse (yet) however when my job (military) required me to travel I used my parents address as home of record and for tax purposes no matter if it was for deployments or frequent moves.
I am married and my home for now is in AZ and I wanna keep my compact license..I am orig from NY state non compact so I am not going to use parents address and tax home you must pay fair market value for rent and be able to prove it to IRS in case of an audit..so I want to be legal and not take short cuts that would jeopordise my good standing with Uncle Sam!

Im traveling this month.I got rid of my aptartment. I don't think it will affect my compact license....I think it will give me less to worry about. Don't want to take any short cuts either.

Contact a Tax Professional for answers on Tax Questions. They are the only one's that will defend you in case of an Audit. (unless you want to do it yourself). It really doesn't matter if you own home or pay rent. From what I understand, the place you make the most of your money is your tax home. If that happens to be where you have the house and/or pay rent or duplicate expenses then you are set. If not then you need to decide if maintaining a residence, paying State Income Taxes on the money you make out of said state is worth you calling that home. Everyone is different. Unfortunatly.
I was watching something the other day about how the IRS has lost several Trillion dollars in tax evasion. People not paying their fair share in taxes. The commentor wanted the Government to Hire more tax examiners. My Idea is make the taxes simple, straight forward and fair. No deductions for the few who are able to manipulate them into windfall income for them. Do it the JCPenny way. Fair and Square.
