Anyone studying B. Midwifery

Published

Hi everyone,

I posted somthing like this in the student section, but got nowhere, so thought I'd try in here.

Is anyone studying B. Mid? or is anyone hoping they are next year?

Im currently a second year nursing student (aprox 1.5yrs into the degree though - I did my first year part time), but am transfering into the B.Mid program next year. I'd love to talk to anyone who's currently enrolled in the program or those hoping like me to be a midwifery student next year.

I decided to transfer now, and then come back and complete B. Nursing as my uni is only offering the Masters Midwifery next year and then will close the program. I know this isn't happening everywhere, but midwifery is my goal so transfering for me now I think is my best option. And with midwifery being very competitive, transfering is a easier option than fighting for a masters spot later.

Any comments, suggestions and info welcome.

My humble opinion: a few years ago I would have said you are mad.....complete nursing first then do a grad dip for 12-18 months. Direct entry midwives are not that multi task if you want to work in a small hospital or remote.

But now with all international recruitment in the past years for nurses ......midwifery, even if inexperienced, there is a job for you anywhere......nurse with no experience, mmmm these jobs are not as easy to walk into as they use to be.

You will never go back to finish nursing as you will be working and will not be able to do without the pay.

Thats why graduate diploma mid students are usually on a employment model, for 4-6 days a fortnight as they are already RN's and need the money.

As yet I do not think there are straight 18 month courses to get a nursing degree after direct entry mid.

I myself have enrolled in a grad dip mid for next year, but life has offered me a different direction in my career, but I am still thinking about doing mid.

As for direct entry midwifery,.....in many moderate and smalls hospitals, often if mid is quiet they will take overflow from other wards, this time it was gynae.......I was asked by a graduate direct entry midwife, if she needed to do a dressing on a lady that was 1 day post op after a vag. hyster. doh, where is the lady parts and where is the uterus? could not believe my ears......you still gotta nurse the women after they have delivered.......

Do what you feel you want to do.. something must have wanted you to do mid. and quit nursing.......do not think to much, you just go around in circles. trust that 6th sense.
