Anyone returned to nursing after taking years off?

Published

Does anyone have advice for returning to the hospital setting after a 4 year break to focus on raising family/finish Master's degree? I've been getting pushback that my experience isn't 'recent' enough (5 years of prior acute care hospital experience here). RN refresher courses seem like a pointless money grab so not too keen on that idea as it doesn't guarantee anything except a maxed out credit card. Any advice or feedback is appreciated! ?

If you have not practiced for five years, you NEED a refresher course. You will have a hard time finding a position in acute care without it and your practice will only be improved for having had it.\

Just wanted to update in case it helps anyone in the future. Received an offer from a well respected Magnet hospital and started last week. Sell yourself and your experience and don't feel pressured to spend money on a refresher course unless you feel you need to personally update your skills.

I am thinking of returning after being out for a bit. I'd love to pick your brain more in regards to not only how you landed a job, but the aftermath. Were there things that came back relatively quick, did you wish you had taken a refresher course, where are you now especially in regards to things around COVID. If it would be easier, or if you prefer, we can connect outside of this forum.

Thanks!

jmh02s hello, I am returning to nursing after >5 years and wondering how you are doing in the position you’ve received back in October. Nerves...
