Anyone get their degree in Europe now a nurse in the states???

Published

Im a student nurse just finishing my degree in Scotland this summer. Im half American (Boston) and half Irish (Dublin). Im wondering if anyone on here has gotten their education from the UK and now works in the US????

I have ALWAYS wanted to move back to Boston to work their as a Nurse but I just found out that it is not looking very possible.

In the UK the Adult, Childrens and Mental Health/Disability degrees are seperate, unlike the US where your general nursing degree covers everything right?

Well according to the Massachuesetts Board of Nursing, in order to take the NCLEX and get a nursing licence you have to have recieved a degree that covers everything. Well Im not. Im getting a BS in Adult Nursing.

I feel like all my dreams have just been flushed down the toilet.

So my main question to this sob story: is there anyone out there who has gotten their degree in the Europe and now lives in the states???

If so, how did you do it?? did you have to take another course or is there a way around this?????

Ive been wanting to be a nurse since I was 12 and I will definitely be living in Boston no matter what happens.

Can anyone help me?? :crying2:

Any advice would be very much appreciated...

There are UK nurses that managed to meet requirements but many trained several years ago when training was general (I was one) so a lot will depend on what your transcripts state. Because you do not require a visa for the US you may find it easier once you have completed your training and licensed in the UK to apply to the state BON and see what they state and then if you need to make hours up see if you can find a nursing school in the US that will accept you as a guest student to make up any hours that are required.

There currently is no where in the UK where you can make these hours up. There is no way to avoid it you need clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Mental Health, obstetrics and Adult.

Also be aware many new grads are struggling to find work in Boston and they trained there so training outside of Boston may make it harder to find a job
