I am enrolling at NYU this fall. Will be taking prerequisites in the fall and starting the accelerated program in the Spring. Is anyone else attending this fall? I'm so thrilled to be admitted. I was all set to go to Hunter initially, but since I wasn't actually in the nursing program at Hunter yet, I didn't want to risk it. Plus, the Hunter administration really turned me off. NYU, on the other hand was nothing but pleasure to deal with.
Elle (and anyone else looking at accelerated 16 programs) I meant to ask - where else are you applying for nursing for fall 2010 (I assume like me you're just interested in an accelerated course - who else offers good ones, except NYU and Columbia)?
How are you finding studying for your pre-requisites at BMCC, how many are you doing per semester and how is the work load?
..thanks Jess
Hey guys,
I RSVPed on the 27th and Im dragging my mother with me (LOL) so I will be in attendance on the 5th. For those of you that cannot make it, I will take notes and relay everything in this post for you guys afterwards! A girl in my class attended the prior open house, and she said there were like 1,000 people there! I think that, what with the recession, a lot of disillusioned/unemployed recent grads may make admissions more competitive due to the sheer number of students applying..But, don't quote me on this one-- it's just an inference.
I am taking my prerequisites at BMCC. This semester I am in Chemistry 121 (you can take the easier 118 if you want according to NYU), AP I, and Nutrition. My B.A. is from Fordham U. At BMCC, the breadth of the courses tend to be more basic; whereas the textbook goes in to great detail and can be more difficult to comprehend, the instructors don't expect you to know many details and give ALL of their tests in multiple choice form. This being said, I find the classes to be relatively easy. Maybe very easy-- but I know this depends on the instructor. Note that all of my instructors are, in fact, PhDs. It is my experience that if you just review/read/complete assignments, you will excel in these classes and get an A. Keep in mind many, ALMOST ALL, of the students in these preclinical classes are: (A) Trying to get in to the BMCC ADN program, (B) Have NO, or little, college work under their belt; I think that post BA students have an edge in terms of intelligence and experience with collegiate learning.
WOW okay I didnt mean to go in to that much detail lol I am taking Microbio and AP II in the spring, and over the summer I will probably take Organic chem as it is often a prereq for Anesthesia masters programs.
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT BMCC: Administration is IMPOSSIBLE to deal with. Your GREATEST task will be getting in to these courses and getting the right information from an administration that spews misinformation (if you manage to get in contact with someone). Luckily I made a contact within the registrar who has been invaluable, without her I would have never gotten a spot in any of the classes (they are packed to the gills with BMCC nursing program hopefuls).. If anyone needs help with the process of getting in to classes, I will try to help. There are no overtallies for the Sci dept so getting in to classes is a priority.
As far as other schools..I am applying to NYU because it begins in the fall, whereas other programs begin in the Spring and I would not have ANY science pre-req grades in time to apply. If I get in to NYU, I am going to go because the timing of the course fits in with my schedule, if I dont get in, I will be applying to SUNY Downstate and Columbia, but in order to get in to the proper Columbia program I will need to take organic, physics, and the GRE. SUNY Buffalo has a program too but....it's in buffalo :-P Stonybrook has a program too, but I believe it also starts in the spring. There are also some programs in Westchester (Pace, College of New Ro), but I live in Manhattan and would ideally like to stay in the city..Adelphi also has a Manhattan/Long Island program, but I'm not interested in this school.
Did I forget anything? LOL Let me know!

Thanks Elle so helpful - I love detail!
Well I live in West Harlem..so want to stick to Manhattan too.
I'm committed to stay close as I'm 7 months pregnant right now (just started maternity leave hence on the internet all day long lol), due iDec, so I don't think venturing further than Manhattan would work for me and I need a fall 2010 start at the earliest.
Miami is cool, I lived there for 2 years went with my previous job...it is pretty, but for the long term New York and the people here are a million times better in my eyes!
What you said about the classes sounds very encouraging and what I expected. My husband just started an occupational therapy course in massage and is studying anatomy and physiology right now - his tests are all multiple choice.
That's interesting you want to do anesthesia, that's what I'm interested too, although I thought Columbia were the only school to offer this speciality, NYU do too?
I suspected BMCC admissions would be a nightmare. I'm seriously tempted to try and do all my re-reqs at NYU. Although, I will have to see what financial package I can put together for myself, otherwise I'll be coming back to you for help with BMCC.
Look forward to hearing what you and your mom discover at the NYU open evening :)
Hey Jess -- gotta run to work but some quick comments. Congrats on the baby! I would apply NOW if you want to take classes at BMCC in Spring. I would either apply as (1) a nonmatriculated, nondegree student as I did, but it makes getting in to classes difficult as you're last on the list..This type of "admission" is instant and you dont need to send any documents except perhaps a copy of your diploma. Alternatively, you can apply as a liberal arts major and feign matriculation, which I think some people do! Not sure if this makes registration easier, but I think it does (I will find out). Personally, I just wouldn't take the prereqs at NYU considering the 15 month program's cost alone, but that's a personal preference!
NYU doesn't offer the Anesthesia program, so I would be just doing the BSN, putting in my time in the ICU, then applying to Columbia program, or perhaps one of the SUNYs which also offer similar programs (see downstate and buffalo)... On that note, I have to run before I'm late, but we're practically neighbors! I live on the UWS right by Zabars!

i got in nyu spring 2009 as transfer student, but after a year, they still ask me to take on English and world culture as GE classes in next semester, so i am not able to start clinicl hours, the 2 classes which i already took before i transferred, so i have been here for 2 semesters, and now i still need one more semester to take the class that i already took...
so i think it's not a good choose, maybe U OF San Francisco will be better than it here??
About the classes that i can transferred, I was told totally differently before and after i transferred to NYU.
the funnest part is about the english class; when i just transferred, one of their English department director told me to take one English then i am done with English, and this semester i registered for that class, but then another director told me that i have to take one more English class after this one, i asked them why they told me the first director who told me to take this English class doesn't really know.
So think carefully, if you plan to transfer to NYU, and I don't think it's a good idea, many students said that.:hlk:
