Anyone attending SSC-Illinois

Hello, This is my first post. I was wondering if anyone out there is currently enrolled in the nursing program at South Suburban College in South Holland or if you have graduated from the program? I have a few questions my counselor cant seem to answer.

I got my non RN associates from SSC, (was on the xc running team the year before they cancelled it, we won all regional for a couple of years).

Anyhow, the RN program at SSC is somewhat notorious, not all of the professors and so on but, it has a rep.

Oh, I initially wanted to become an RN when I first became a CNA at SSC in 1989 but, I waited for quite a few years, when I went back to become a full time student in 1998-2000 at SSC I realized that the pre-reqs were all full so in the time it took me to complete two full years for my regular Associates in Allied Health I still had not completed the pre-reqs to get into the nursing program.

The cut off for applying for the next fall is real early and you must be done with ALL the pre-reqs so it would have taken an extra year for me to start the RN program, making it a four year Associate RN.

So, I took my Associate credits and transfered to a four year univeristy, changed my major, a couple of times, and in the end got a BA in Sociology with a minor in Psychology and the Associates with a Biology major, (in allied health). I discovered a masters entry to nursing program along the way while my major was changed to pre-med and I am now six months away from the graduation date for my msn generalist degree.

Some women I know who graduated from SSC with their ADN were very on the spot and SOOO focused to meet the deadlines and to come back the next year if they didn't...it was FAR too cutthroat and competitive of a nursing student life for me.

Gen-we all have different routes and interests....before I started at my current university I was accepted and has a post-bacc seat at Prairie State College for their RN, I really LIKE PSC over SSC nursing program ANY day!! This is because of the dean and the program but, in total honestly I haven't spoken with anyone at SSC nursing program about anything in 20 months, :)

What do you mean SSC has a rep? I thought about going to PSC but I need to complete some of their pre reqs because they are not the same as SSC. How difficult was it for you to get into PSC - nursing program? I also wish it wasnt so competitive and we didnt have to apply to get into the program. I sometimes wonder if I am wasting my time.

I got accepted into PSC much quicker than at SSC. Not only that but, whenever you speak with PSC they seem to treat you like a person and are respectful whereas the reputation about SSC seems to revolve around one person who is in control there, sort of the gatekeeper. I DO know that there are good folks there at SSC yet, I've worked with nurses throughout the south suburban Chicagoland who have echoed, "ugh" about the SSC reputation. I cannot really go into details about my own experience because that is only one experience and I didn't make the deadline to apply in time, several years in a row, (boy did that lady really make a personal insult about that too!)

Not necessarily there to foster you but, there to herd the masses and deal with the giant waiting lists...kind of seems like they have a distorted perspective.

Talk around, possibly even attempt to make your own informed opinion by calling local colleges to schedule an appointment for even a telephone discussion with their dean of nurses.

Next possibly call local universities where nurses go for their RN to BSN and ask the university what they've heard about RNs from SSC and from SSC RNs themselves?
