I will be interviewed for RN position for SF county jail. Anybody have suggestions? What kind of questions should I expect to be asked?

Two of the questions i remember being asked were; "An inmate has been diagnosed with an acute case of hepatitis A after he had been housed in several different housing units. What would you do in this situation if you were the nurse in charge?" What do you consider as your first priority at the time you are notified of the situation?" 2) " You respond to a "man down" you are told that the inmate might have taken some methadone sold to him by another inmate. What are your immediate actions going to be.? What is the most common medication used as an opiate antagonist? What is the most important thing to remember when giving the medication? The response that they want to hear you tell them is the basic survey, airway, breathing, circulation. They want to see if you remember to say "Get help call 911" The Narcan answer they want is that you may have to give the Narcan in repeated doses and that if the inmate responds to the Narcan they most likely have immediate and severe opiate withdrawal signs and symptoms. I know that they often ask this question but iI was not asked; "You see a deputy strike an inmate in the face and threatens to hit the inmate again if he does not comply with the deputy's order. What do you do? The answer is that they want you to say that you make your presence known by being in full view of all parties and sending a third party for a line supervisor or another deputy. The more people you can bring to the situation the better. Direct the custody staff to move the inmate to the medical office

Awesome, is that the place you can make + $200,000 doing overtime?

There was a time that RN's could make that much in wages. Every nurse employed by the Department of Public Healh; the division of the City and County that is the overall department that has Jail Health Laguna Honda and Clinics and even SF General I think gives every RN the opportunity to be hired for a P103 position. So if you are a regular full-time RN 2320 that is the job number in the jails you can also be per-diem or P103. Some RN's are just P103 and work per-diem only but do it regularly. Some RN 2320 and P103's are oriented to more than one jail so they can have more opportunities for shifts. The busiest and most fast paced is county jail 9; the Intake and Release Center. The nurses there used to work 8 hour shifts and there were frequent P103 shifts available. County Jail 8 right above CJ 9 is the direct supervision (one of them) jail which houses the medical unit Pod C.t is a busy unit and uses P 103 RN. My favorite was now County jail 3 used to be county jail 1 i on the 6th floor of the Hall of Justice. I worked there as a 2320 plus P103 but was oriented to CJ 9 as well so I could do both jails. CJ 1 was an old linear jail that housed IM's going to court usually and it was a fast paced but workable jail. Since the scandal hit the newspapers about the amount of overtime being paid I think the managers have to do better with their regular staffing; do more with less. I think the days of $200,000 a year salaries are gone but the Jails pay very well and there was overtime available.??The work is very hard and stressful; more so in these jails because of the City and County they serve. and has a large homeless population like all big cities. My experience there was awesome. Each jail has its own manager (or did) the managers were not consistent - some excellent and involved in the day to day issues others were not - distant and difficult was the saying. If you are offered a position take it.It is not just the money but in those jails you really learn what jail nursing is all about and if you apply yourself can learn so much in a short period time. The e record was difficult for some nurses so hopefully you have some basic computer skills before you start and will add to them. Tjhe PharD's are pretty much in charge of the whole division and they are very good. Good luck!
