Any vascular access center nurses out there?

I accepted a job at a vascular access center, where nephrologists perform various interventions on dialysis accesses, and place and remove dialysis catheters. Anybody have any experience in this area? Just wondering what to expect. Thanks in advance

I worked at a vascular acess center. Piece of cake. Radiologist gives meds through sheath placed in fistula. You just hand him meds, pull supplies, chart vitals, recover, and discharge.

Do you ever have to start an IV in that setting? I would love to apply eventually as I've seen listings with the "big two." But both say would have to know how to start IV's. Just curious. I work as acute dialysis nurse right now, but eventually would like better hours. In another year or so I'd love to apply for that position. This coming September I'll have 2 years dialysis experience.

I haven't had to so far. The nephrologist gives the sedation through the dialysis access. But I know we do have an order set for patients that have shellfish/iodine/dye allergies that includes solumedrol, so I guess if the patient has an allergy we would start an IV prior to the procedure. Your dialysis experience will be a big plus! My background is Telemetry, so I'm learning a lot of new stuff.
