I need advice.
I am concerned about my ability to take on more than 12 patients at a time on a very needy floor with some critical patients.
It seems that on nights shift that I will be the only tech sometimes with like 18 -20 patients at a time. I know that I am capable of caring for 12 maybe 13 and I feel I can give them exceptional care BUT.....
Questions:
How many patients are you assigned during the day or night?
How many techs usually work on your floor at night?
How many patients do you feel is a reasonable number for Techs to care for?
Do you feel techs are giving exceptional care at this number?
Once I get your answers, I have follow up questions.

I'm a tech on days on a surgical floor. Normally we have 9 or 10 patients each and day shift is responsible for all the baths and linen changes as well as assisting w/ ambulation, accuchecks, passing trays, etc. It's busy but possible to give good care as long as there aren't too many completes in our assignments. I'm new tho and still working on my time management skills but most of the nurses and other techs are more than willing to lend a helping hand when necessary.
There are usually 2 techs on eves and nights so that's 14 pts each but sometimes there's only 1 tech so they get all 28. At that number no, I don't think you can give good care but it really all depends on the acuity of the floor.
