I know this has nothing to do with nursing, but I am starting the BSN program at LSU in New Orleans in August and I need to find childcare for my three year old daughter and one year old son. I had them in UNO's Children's Center while I did my prereq's at UNO, and it was a great place for them and really cheap. LSU doesn't have a childcare program and I don't want to pay an arm and a leg at a regular daycare because I won't be working during school and I am not eligible for childcare assistance. :o Does anyone know of any good daycare programs in the New Orleans area with good hours and isn't too expensive?? I am looking for a place that has a good learning atmosphere and good teachers, not just babysitters. Does anyone else have this problem? Where do you send your kids?? I'd appreciate any suggestions. :p

Why aren't you eligible for childcare assistance if i'm not being too forward? If you will be unemployed, you sound applicable to me!

You aren't eligible if you don't participate in school or work for at least 25 hours a week. For school they count credit hours and not the actual time spent at school! I think this is ridiculous because most of the time the ratio of hours spent in the class or at clinicals to credit hours given for the class isn't equal. Let's not even mention the time I'll be in the library or lab studying. I mentioned this to the child care administration and even showed them where I would actually be at school for 25 hours or more, but they don't want to hear it, they only look at credit hours. So because I go to school five days a week, I would have to get a job over the weekend to make up for the extra ten hours, but then I would have to find childcare for the weekend and pay extra because they don't cover that! :uhoh3: And because I would have a minimum wage job for a couple of hours over the weekend (that would probably only be enough to pay for weekend childcare services) they would lower the amount I receive in childcare based on that income. They're running me in circles. I don't know what I'm going to do. :angryfire

Let me totally back up and say congratulations on getting into LSU! That is one huge accomplishment and why I can answer your last question. You are going to do whatever it takes. If you have two kids and have made it through thus far, nothing will stop you now!! I have been in your shoes girl, i'm sure many of you reading this message have been as well. It is the spirit of the Woman and what will make us superior nurses. Now that I have concluded my inspirational piece, let me move on to the informational address.

My best friend found an excellent nursery/daycare center for her toddler very close to where you will attend your clinicals. The name of the Place is called Hume Development Center and the cost of their services is based upon your income. They are on the ball with everything and she loves it. My second suggestion would be to call Catholic Charities, Volunteers of America and entities of the like to find out what they have that you are applicable for. There are many things out there just waiting to be discovered. I hope that you will find something soon and I will keep my eys and ears open for you. Good Luck!!

Hey Ladies, I think that it is crucial that we keep one another updated on all fronts and not just our education and careers. I'm guessing that most of us have kids and families, so let's help one another out.

Please read this tread and if you know of free or affordable, safe daycare here in New Orleans - holla. We have several members in need. Also, if you know about any progams that will assist on the financial end, please respond and title it accordingly. Thank you.
