Any lvn's working as a unit secretary?

Published

Just wanted to know more insight about the job the pros and cons. Do u gain or lose any skills, any comments would be very helpful thanks.

At my old job the most recent DON for the moment decided she wanted all RNs on the floor so there were multiple shifts each pay period that I was pulled from the floor, initially I was instructed to assist the HUCs with getting all the residents' charts transferred to our new computer system!!! I spent an entire shift scanning lab reports and X-ray results, let me tell you, I was not a happy camper! I did not work my butt off in nursing school to be working as a HUC! Not too mention at the end of my shift I had done more than twice as much as the two HUCs had done combined!! After that my duties changed as the "extra" nurse, I assisted the shift supervisor, transcribed new admission orders, checked MARs at the end of the month, and assisted the floor nurses when they needed me. Working as a unit clerk isn't what you went to school for and you will lose those clinical skills, like the saying goes "if ya don't use it ya lose it"

Would it be a career change? Why would a nurse be working as a secretary?
