So many of the threads regarding direct-entry programs featured mainly east coast schools, there have to be a few folks out there like me who've applied to the UCLA MECN program for the Fall 2007 term. Just wanted to say hello and let's have fun waiting four months for our notifications!
Also, If you're out there, did any of you take the GRE although it wasn't required?
Cheers!
Suzanne
Dear All,
I read your posts with a lot of hope.
Here's my story - I am considering the MECN program at UCLA and even though I will not be applying yet, I intend to take all prerequisties starting Spring 08. I have a degree in Chemistry, even though it's a foreign degree. I've never been a nurse or worked in healthcare.
According to your experiences at the open house and meeting swith officials, Do I stand a good chance. Do I need some kind of medical experience to qualify?
You advice is highly appreciated.
Thank you
Hi tt11-
I would definitely suggest getting some health care related experience in while you're waiting to apply. You could volunteer at a local hospital or non-profit agency, for example. Although it is not specifically stated that health care experience is required, it certainly couldn't hurt and would help to make your application much more competitive. You are given the opportunity in the personal statement to discuss your health care experience, so I think it would be a good idea to get some!
Hope this helps. :-)
from my understanding, after speaking to many nurses and others in the health profession, the ucla program is not recommended. i have a friend currently in the program and she just finished her first year there. however, she has not had one hour thus far in a clinic/hospital. because it is a newer program, i would stick with the msmc program. the masters you receive does not do that much, unless you want to move up in administration. does anyone know the website to apply for the kaiser scholarship program?

No clinicals in the first year?? That's odd. From my understanding in speaking with someone in the program, and looking at the program schedule, it looks like clinicals should begin Spring Quarter of the first year and then continue on in summer and through the second year.
