Animals and travel?

My husband and I are thinking of traveling, but we have animals (2 dogs,2 cats). I thought I remembered from traveling years ago that you could take a housing amount supplied by the complany, then make up the difference (to pay for accomodations that would allow this). Anybody know?:)

You can usually take the subsidy to find your own housing. I've traveled with one dog and generally had no problem with having my company find me housing. The way it worked was that I was responsible for pet deposits and any additional monthly pet rent. My agency fronted the deposit to the apts. and then took the amount out of my pay over several checks.

On a couple of occasions when I was considering contracts the agency let me know that a specific town was difficult to find pet friendly housing. I reconsidered taking those contracts. Ask your agency since this would be important even if finding your own housing.

Keep in mind that many apartments also limit the number of pets. Four may be difficult to house.

So if you take the subsidy and find your own place, how do you know where to look? Being unfamiliar with most towns I want to travel to, I would feel pretty uncomfortable just picking a place without knowing what kind of neighbourhood etc it is in. Is there some sort of resource for travel nurses who do decide to find their own housing?

I haven't done this myself (as I said usually no problem with company finding me housing) but I have heard other travelers say they have good luck with Craigslist.
