An odd fork in the road

U.S.A. California

Hey everyone! First-time poster here seeking some information or advice on my current education situation.

As it stands right now, I am 2 labs away from having a Human Biology degree from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) but for reasons I shall explain below, I am not certain that I want to finish my degree just yet.

My eventual goal is to become an RN via the BSN route. I have all the core classes and then some but the hard part is figuring out what I should be doing. As of right now, I could finish my BS and enter into a BS-to-BSN program. However, if I finish my BS my education costs go up quite a bit, not to mention that loans are not as available and most. Once I get my foot into the door for nursing, I can then go back and take the last two labs that I need to finish my original BS.

I feel that I am at an odd place in my education path. Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any relevant advice?

I was not in your situation, but I think you are wise to consider the negative financial consequences of finishing your first BS now. I have warned several people about this issue, but most don't seem to understand the serious implications of it. If you browse this site, you'll see that most people finish their first degree ... then have limited financial aid options for their BSN -- and end up either deeply, deeply in debt or having to choose an ADN because they can't afford the BSN.

I think your hesitation to finish your other BS first is wise. You can always finish it later if you want to.

I say you apply to SDSU's nursing program. If you don't complete your degree, I think you should be able to transfer. However, if you complete your degree SDSU is no longer an option as they don't accept second degree candidates (I wanted to go to State, but b/c I already have a degree I was unable to apply as a second degree candidate). The other option is CSU San Marcos if you want to stay in the San Diego area. Good luck!
