An Interesting Finding Regarding Kila Lab's Single-Head

:yeah:

Some of you may have read my earlier review postings on various stethoscopes from Kila Labs and GRX Medical (the CD27 is just amazing). I've been using Kila's single-head stethoscope (http://www.kila.com/specssingle.html) for a few months now and was impressed by the quality of the bi-lumen tubing, chest-piece, and clear/detailed sound. I've compared it directly with my friend's Master Cardiology many times. In fact, it is such good clone of the Master Cardiology in size, weight, looks, and performance that the only obvious difference is on the diaphragm. Yes, the Littmann has a tunable diaphragm. I happen to be the curious type of guy who likes to play with and test things. My buddy just happens to have a replacement tunable diaphragm/rim set for his Littmann, so I decided to try it on my Kila scope for fun...Lo and behold, it fitted on and functioned perfectly!!! I cannot resist comparing the two scopes again and had a difficult time telling which one is which (luckily my buddy's MC has his name engraved on it).

What I'm trying to tell you is this: You can now put together a Master Cardiology for $40! The replacement rim/diaphragm set is less than $10 and the Kila was about $30 shipped. My Kila single-head now has the full capability of auscultating hi/low frequency sounds from Littmann's tunable diaphragm! If you're already using a Kila single-head, then you know how good of a scope it is. Now you have an option of expanding its powers and upgrade its looks for next to nothing. Have fun guys!

CNA_Timmy,

That was some work you had to go through. I'm glad it's all cleared up; however, I doubt if your nursing director will be able to enforce his/her authoritarian rulings upon the nursing class on such a ridiculous requirement. Please test out the CD27 when it arrives; I'd appreciate your input on any findings. It's unfortunate you're not able to get it at their promotion price as myself and the students I'd recommended it to did. At least you didn't have to deal with the troubles of buying a single-head scope and later finding out you have to get a dual-head.

Got my GRX CD27 today and it is AWSOME!!! No comparison between it and the cheap sprague I had! My mom just visited and made me dinner :-) and tried it out. She is jealous, she is a DON at a nursing home, but still works at the hospital per diem on a cardiac step down unit. We ordered her one, and she bought another for her sister (also a nurse). Granted I have no idea what I am listening for, but I know I can hear my heart much better with this one. Even at 50 bucks it is still well worth it! Now the only problem is I dont want it to get lost, or grow legs. I might just have to get the Kia as well to have a back up. Thanks!

Thanks. I've been trying to get as much feedbacks on the CD27 as possible to ensure that it's not just me and I'm not recommending the wrong equipments to fellow students. When I was first recommended the CD27, being a Littmann fan, I didn't want to believe it either. Then I tried it for myself and compared it to my Littmann Cardiology III; I was disappointed. Not that the GRX outperformed the Littmann, but I expected the Cardiology III to be bounds above the CD27 since it was 3-4x the price. What I found out was that the GRX equaled the Littmann in virtually every way (quality and performance). Littmanns used to be the "champion" in my head...now I'm alot more open-minded. Also, if you're thinking about getting a Kila, the only one I could recommend is the Single-head stethoscope; I would rate it as a VERY GOOD scope.

Well the GRx CD27 is back in the ebay store of GRx Medical! Back to the cheap price. LOL... well since it is so cheap and I love mine so much I bought another. thats 75 bucks for two scopes... still half as much as a one Littman CIII! And one can stay in the box in my closet... so one day if the first grows legs they second can be taken out. Of course I am still keeping an eye on it!

Well thanks to reading this thread and another post by beyondx4, I bought the GRX CD27. I have had 2 littmann's over the years, the master cardiology and cardiology III. Both of which I loved. Sadly, they both have been stolen from me. So after reading these threads, and contemplating whether to buy a Littmann again, I was happy to hear that there is something out there comparable. So we'll see. I will post back when I receive it and let you know what I think.

After reading so many great reviews about the GRX CD27 - I decided to go for it. I am just getting ready to start my nursing program in a few weeks & I've been struggling over whether or not to buy the Littmann Cardio III or the Classic II. I've spent so much money already buying all my 1st semester books & supplies that I was having a hard time spending up to another $150 for a stethoscope. Especially after hearing so many tell stories of them "walking off".

I found the same model on their Ebay store & got one for $34 with shipping! I figure even if I don't care for this model - it will serve as a good backup. I'll repost after I receive it & start using.

Has anybody tried this yet? Does the Littmann diaphragm replacement make that big of a difference? I'm pretty happy with the Kila diaphragm, but if the Littmann is even better, I'll make the switch! I typically don't like the tunable diaphragms (I think they are tricky to use effectively) but if this technique gets rave reviews, it would be interesting to try it out!

Hello

Just to clear a few points.

1. Stethoscopes are not regulated with the FDA but US Customs require the exporting company to be registered with the FDA.

2. Partly because of the switching of diaphragms, 3M Littmann has sued Kila Labs in US District Court, Minnesota.

A jury trail will be held in the summer of 2010

3. The consensus seems to be that tunable diaphragms are out. Fixed ones seem to be just as good.

Hi beyondx4. Stethoscopes that are equipped with a tunable diaphragm have an attenuating ring mounted behind the diaphragm inside the stethoscope. Unless the stethoscope you are fitting the Littmann tunable diaphragm with is also equipped with a tunable diaphragm, this "tunable" function will not work. With that being said I do not know what company makes the best diaphragm and it may very well be that different ones function better on different scopes. I am going to experiment with several diaphragms in my Kila stethoscope and see which gives me the best sound. I like to play and experiment and test things too :)
