Family Practice

Specialties Ambulatory

Hi!

I am starting my new position on Thursday as an LVN in a busy family practice. Up until this point, I have been working corrections for a little over a year. It is definitely going to be a change of scenery. I am really nervous though because I am going to be exposed to pediatric patients which is a WHOLE new world for me.

Anyone have any tips on surviving in an family practice? I am used to crazy busy, believe me - it is crazy in the jail 24/7.

Thanks for the advice ahead of time, I really appreciate it!

You'll have scheduled pts so check the schedule every morning. Check phone messages first thing in a.m. and answer the easy ones; save the PA's for downtime. Scan through the schedule and if someone's coming in for lab or imaging follow up, check the chart and make sure the results are in and request them STAT if not. Make sure the rooms are stocked and see if there's any special procedures that require any additional supplies/set up. After the last pt for the morning is brought back check phone messages again and initiate PA requests (prior authorizations, usually required for CT/MRI and a lot of prescriptions), check the fax in-box for rx refill requests; answer morning phone messages. After lunch make sure the rooms are clean and stocked and ready for the p.m. schedules. After last pt of the day is in the room, check messages again and return afternoon calls. Once the last pts leave start cleaning/sanitizing rooms and shutting them down. Your office manager may have a certain schedule or routine for you but try and find your rhythm and have fun.

Thanks T-Bird78 :)
