Am i still renewing my LVN license?

Published

This is my 8th year working as an LVN. I became an RN end of 2015. I kept my LVN job in the county for year & at the same time working as RN in Psych. I got recently hired for a job position as an RN in the county hospital (where i worked as an LVN). Shall i just not renew my LVN anymore? My lvn & RN licenses have the same expiration

The thing is, if are hired into a LVN role, you can only perform LVN duties. However, if something goes wrong, you are held to the standard of your highest license, i.e., the RN. That's a catch-22 you--and your employers--don't want to be in.

Unless you really plan to work somewhere else as a LVN, I would inactivate the LVN license or just let it lapse.

You don't need both. If you have an RN license, you are qualified to fill an LVN position. Scope of practice issues mentioned by Meriwhen would still apply, but even if you want to apply to an LVN position, you don't need both and RN and LVN license to do so.

Except that in some cases the employer requires an LVN license for an LVN slot, no matter that the individual has an RN license. Since the chances of the OP getting into this type of situation is low, it is cost effective to let the LVN license lapse.

Agreed. And it could always be reinstated/reactivated should circumstances change and the OP needs to use her LVN licensure for a position.
