Am I dumb??

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm sorry if I am wasting your time with silly questions....

So I applied for the nursing program at SFSU (It's actually in conjunction with Canada College for 2nd bach students (me).

I applied in November and won't find out until end March/first week April. I feel nauseous EVERY day just thinking about it. :barf02:

My b/f says that I will be fine and he knows I'll get in. I think I am a great candidate (not to toot my horn), but I have wanted to be a nurse for *years*: I helped my mom raised my brother who was a near-drowning victim. He was 3 when it happen and suffered permanent brain damage from it. He died in 2001.

I have a 3.9, have worked in academic, research, and clinical medicine at UCLA, Stanford, and UCSF. I have volunteered a **ton**, too. I have great letter so rec.

My worry, though is that one of the "extra credit" supplemental criteria is having multicultural experience or speaking a second language. I am not FLUENT in another language, but know some German and Spanish.

I am afraid that because I am not fluent, I won’t get it and I will have to sit around for another year. I honestly think I am going to get an ulcer. There are 40 seats for over 300 applicants.

I get so sad thinking that I might not get in….

HELP!!!

Oh my gosh!! I love all of you guys! These forums are the *BEST*!

Thanks for all your encouragement. I feel better, but I will just have to wait and see.

Hey jimthrop and moongirl - it's not a "requirement" per se, but applicants get "extra points" for speaking another language OR having "multicultural experience". I was a camp counselor for underprivileged kids and worked in the geriatric clinic @ Stanford, so they said that would count. I just think speaking Spanish would give that "extra boost".

Crossing my fingers....

Again, thank you ALL for your support. I truly am SOOOOO glad I joined these forums...everyone helps so much!!! *tearing up*

:kiss

First of all, I agree that there is no dumb questions.

You need to follow your heart and go for your dreams.

Try not to pay attention to folks who make "wise-type" comments and most of all, keep your own council until you are truly established.

There are some folks who are jealous of those who seem to be suceeding in life.

I was rejected by a state university twice when applying for the nursing program. I finally decided to go to a local community college. When I applied I was already an LPN, had a Bachelors in Philosophy and Psychology, as well as a masters in History and a license to teach elementary school k-6. I have a long and positive work history along with impecable references (included a PhD Nurse who taught at the college I was applying to). The unfortunate fact is that there are just too many applicants for very few spots in most places. I'm told it helps to take classes as a nonmatriculated student in the school you want to attend - tends to bump you up on the list I guess. I consider myself to be quite accomplished educationally, not dumb by any means, and was rejected twice.

This isn't meant to be discouraging, quite the opposite. If you want to be a nurse - believe me you will find a way
