I am fortunate enough to have been accepted at Linfield (fall cohort) as well as OHSU. This decision is making me a lunatic!! I have felt for a long time that Linfield is my school of choice. I love that they go straight through summer and I will graduate in 21 months. I have read through the posts on this site and Linfield has so much to offer. I love that they work so much from a global perspective, and I feel that the critical thinking emphasis that they place on the education really prepares for management and advancement.
Then I got accepted to OHSU. I'm so star-struck and in awe of OHSU. I never thought in a million years I would be accepted there. They are rated so highly on a national level. I'm fairly certain I don't want to stay in the PDX area after I graduate, and the OHSU name will carry more weight out of state than Linfield will. The state-of-the-art sim lab makes me drool a little and I know that having clinical rotations at OSHU will give me access to things I will never otherwise see.
All of that being said, I'm leaning toward Linfield at the moment. Am I crazy to be considering giving up my spot at OHSU? Is OHSU getting me off track with their fancy name and sim lab? Then again, in the grand scheme of things an extra year of school doesn't make that much difference and I may really need the extra year of clinical rotations to feel prepared. Someone please help me stop spinning in circles!! ANY advice or thoughts would be greatly, greatly appreciated!
Does anyone have any idea how going through OCNE (ie MHCC to OHSU) would look on a transcript when applying to grad school?
If you graduated from MHCC (as opposed to the option where you just transfer into OHSU) then you would have a transcript from MHCC and then a transcript for your RN-BS year at OHSU.
If you transferred instead of graduating, all your MHCC classes would transfer to OHSU and you would have one OHSU transcript.
Andie,
I wanted to send a private msg, but can't figure out how... sorry. I did a dry run this morning to Linfield to test traffic getting there for 8 am and found I could make it in time, even with an accident on the I5.
How is your decision coming? I am thinking that must be so hard. Like I said, I don't envy you making this decision. I would be "stuck" too. I have to say again though, that I am so happy with the standard of education at Linfield, and to be finished in 21 months is fabulous!! Also, parking is far better in NW than on the hill!
ok, enough from me... I know this will send a fresh onslaught of opinions. Good luck making up your mind.
BTW, I picked up my CPR book today so I can study ahead for the class. Are you registered for the 25th? See you there!
Jen
I'll have Furman for Micro.Definitely, a playdate is in order!
Furman is Hard. Get a seat as close to the podium as you can, he doesn't speak very loud. Buy the cheap first edition of the book, there is nothing in the newer edition that you need. In fact I got mine online for about $4.
I also have the full lab manual which is loose leaf so I could not sell it back. Providing the edition hasn't changed I would sell you both for a very nominal fee.
When you take the lab quizzes do not let the first (easy) one fool you. There is no study guides for the lab section like there is for theory, and there are a lot of technical questions on the labs. I don't know if it was just our class because of Summer schedule - but we didn't get to actually do most of the labs. We only watched demonstrations of them. That wouldn't have been a problem if there weren't so many procedure questions on the tests. If you can close your eyes and correctly recite all the steps, and chemicals, used in the lab and what their purpose was as well as what type of Agar is used etc.. then you will be ready. Know how many water washes there are in a gram stain, know which chemical indicators cause what color changes etc.
Other than that, anything on the study guide pages.. and that means ANYTHING no matter how seemingly irrelevant can show up on the tests.
Most importantly- check your tests! We had multiple incidences of 1 test at the table having answers marked wrong that everyone else at the table (with the same answer) were marked right. If you can't find his answer somewhere in the text, notes, or study guide then take it back to him for your points.
Dharma,
Thanks a mil for the advice. I appreciate it, but now you have me scared!! I have to pass his class, my future is riding on it!! So did you take his class last summer?
Sure I'd be interested in buying your used books. Do you know how to send private messages via this forum? I haven't figured that out yet.
Cheers, Jen
At the top of someone's message under their name it says "registered user", to the right there are 4 little icons, one of them is to send a private message. Just hover over the icons it will tell you what they do.
Abe is hard but fair, and he's really nice and really funny! Passing isn't too hard, it is getting an A that was really a challenge.
Do the extra credit assignment, study for the tests and quizzes. Create a special symbol to use or color of highlighter for when he says "you should know this" or "did you hear that?" or "this is fair game for the tests". You will be fine.
Thank you so much to everyone that shared their thoughts and opinions! I have finally come a decision and made it official today I am officially part of the OHSU fall cohort on the Portland campus. WOOOOO HOOOOO
I'm so super excited to get started!! Anyway, I hope that this makes someone on the Linfield wait list very, very happy. Thanks again everyone!!

Obviously, it's just one element (I've also been asked things like my GPA, etc. --although with a high GPA many schools' are waving the GRE). I'll take any help I can get :-)
