I was wondering if anyone knew how the alternate list at the University of South Carolina worked. Will they let you know your ranking and how often do alternates get in?? Thanks for your help. I am not sure which is worse - being rejected all together or placed on the alternate list.

If you've applied there, and especially if you're on their alternate list, I would contact them directly. I wouldn't take information from anywhere but the horse's mouth.
Given that an alternate-listed student has a greater chance of entering a program than one who's been rejected, I would say that's a better position to be in, wouldn't you?
I emailed the program director regarding the list but have not heard back thus far. I know being an alternate is better than rejection, I am just disappointed.

I have heard several people on this forum have gotten in off the alternate list and done very well. I think your chances maybe pretty good as many people interview with multiple schools and may choose another school if accepted at several, others don't accept for numerous other reasons so don't feel its over yet.
