What is your hospital's or OR's policy on allowing a parent w/a minor child in the OR ? We leave it up to the anesthesia provider, pretty much they allow one parent, but not if they seem too nervous or anxious about it. They have to leave once the child is asleep and b/f intubation. A nurse has to be there to escort the parent out when it's time.
we dont at the outpatient center that I work in. the kiddos get po versed mixed with tylenol in preop. we will be going through the same thing next month when dd has a T&A done. I was talking to the CRNA that will be in the room and she said I was more then welcome to come in for the IV and induction. I said no thank you. I would prefer not to see my own child go under..

of course it depends on your facility and what your "rules" are. I have only seen it done once or twice here. the parents need to realize at some point they have to "let go". The issue of control will be with them forever, but like growing up at some point they have to let go! I have been in the operating room when my nephew was going to sleep for a procedure and the kid hated me for a while after because he associated the pain with me....... the Auntie that he trusted:uhoh3: I think it is important for parents to know that you are interested in their child not just in getting the case done. I also have had issues with adults that need more attention than the patient at one of the worse times in the world....... so if your facility does allow it, way cool....... I am glad that mine at this time does not. that way I do not have to split my attention away from my patient (who as most of us know children's airways go to crap FAST.) and I do not want to be trying to pick an adult up off the floor when I should be paying attention to the anesthesiologist...
